Call of Duty: Activision's player base falls below 100 million again in 2023 with premium content

In Activision’s quarterly report, the publisher goes into its user numbers and has to state that its monthly active users fell below the 100 million mark for the first time in almost three years in Q2 2022. Jason Schreier also commented on the premium content for Call of Duty from 2023.

The second-quarter financial report is out and Activision’s numbers could be looking better, not only showing a decline in revenue, but also falling below a key mark in terms of player base. At the end of the second quarter of 2022, the number of monthly active users was below 100 million for the first time since the end of 2019, which the publisher had recorded in the first quarter of 2022.

In Q2, according to Activision, there were only 94 million monthly active users. Since the end of 2019, player counts have surpassed 100 million with the release of Call of Duty: Mobile and peaked at 150 million players in the first quarter of 2021.

Revenue is also reported to be down for the second quarter year over year, which Activision says “reflects a reduced commitment to the Call of Duty franchise.” Towards the end of the year, this should pick up steam again as two more Call of Duty titles are set to be released, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (on October 28th) and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. Activision also reiterates going forward:

“Teams across the Call of Duty ecosystem are well positioned to support these launches with extensive live operations while continuing the development of new premium content planned for 2023 and beyond.”

However, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier fears that the premium content will not be about a new Call of Duty main part, but that it will be about new content for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022). The next main entry is again to be directed by Treyarch, who is known to have been postponed to 2024.
