World of Warcraft Mobile has reportedly been cancelled

The launch date for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic is set.

According to a new Report from Bloomberg Blizzard and NetEase have put a World of Warcraft mobile spin-off on hold. The game was said to have been in the works for three years at NetEase, who also contributed to the development of Diablo Immortal.

World of Warcraft Mobile on hold

The new title arguably operated under the codename Neptune, and was intended to be a mobile WoW MMO set in a different time period than the main game. According to Bloomberg, more than 100 NetEase employees worked on the new title, but now that the entire team has been disbanded, only a few remain employed by the company.

The project was reportedly canceled due to a dispute between Blizzard and NetEase over terms, so the quality of the product may have nothing to do with it. Blizzard is currently making increasing inroads into the mobile market with the rather controversial Diablo: Immortal and the upcoming Warcraft Arclight Rumble. So a mobile MMO wouldn’t have been too much of a surprise, but it looks like we’ll never see this one again.

According to Jason Schreier, Blizzard was also working on another mobile game in the Warcraft universe, which should have worked similarly to the popular Pokemon GO. The title was probably in development for four years, which is quite a long time for a mobile game.
