Broken Me Survival Game Looks Like It’s For Kids – Currently €2 On Steam

Steam is celebrating the popular genre of survival games with a big genre sale. The “Steam Survival Games Promotion” runs until August 8th, 2022 and offers many strong discounts. MeinMMO author Maik Schneider would like to introduce you to a strong title that he personally failed with, but which every genre fan should allude to.

My career as a survival gamer started in a small wooden shack in Minecraft shortly after the release of the hit block on PlayStation 3. It’s 2013 and I was still afraid of the zombies in the game.

Since we didn’t have any beds yet, we sat in the cramped shack all night, waiting for the sunshine to redeem us.

A lot has happened since then. I’ve played dozens of survival games, killed thousands of zombies and built huge automatic train stations in Minecraft that could organize the local transport of entire metropolises.

During that time, I only experienced one survival title that really got me down. A survival game I’m fed up with. It Broke Me: Don’t Starve and the co-op version Don’t Starve Together.

If you like challenges and like to figure out how to progress in a survival game on your own, then I would like to recommend this title to you and briefly introduce it to you. If that’s not your thing, at least now you know how to fuck me up.

Don’t Starve – A blot on my survival career

The game is currently on sale on Steam for a whopping €2.08. The co-op version Don’t Starve Together is also reduced, for only €5.09.

I don’t want to deter you with my assessment – on the contrary. Don’t Starve is an excellent survival game and has all the mechanics to be a classic of the genre:

• build base
• crafting tools
• grow food
• tame animals
• smash opponents
• research improvements
• survive darkness
• season change
• Large, randomly generated world

You can not only starve, as the title of the game suggests. Almost everything in the world wants to kill you. You can even get too scared and die from it.

And this is exactly where the game broke me cold. The first round in the co-op back then with my squad was characterized by a constant economy of shortages – we didn’t have enough of everything.

I like the challenge, it was a real struggle to get through the first year. At this point I was still having a lot of fun.

But we didn’t manage to cross the shortage threshold. Worse still… in the winter an unforeseen event started. I don’t want to give too much away, but I can say it pretty much destroyed all of our progress.

We finished the game that night and I was never ready to start another serious round.

Ultimately, we didn’t use a mechanic properly, which put us at a huge disadvantage. But after a dozen hours of grind and living on the edge of existence, I was out of breath. Don’t Starve has permanently damaged me.

And if you look at some pictures without knowing the background, you might even think it’s a game for children. A blot on my survival career.

Despite this, Don’t Starve is one of the best survival games on Steam. It’s hard and rough, it doesn’t explain anything to you and it’s always trying to kill you. The best conditions for a daring adventure.

But sometimes a small omission, a small stupidity is enough and fun, frustration and joy turns into “I’ll never touch it again”.

For €2 or €5, it’s definitely worth a try. A top game of the survival genre with deep mechanics and its own charm. But you can’t get me into this nasty dream world anymore.
