Threema Libre: Google-free version of the messenger released

from Rhonda Bachman
Messenger Threema continues to turn away from Google services. After the Swiss developers released Threema Push at the end of March, the messenger now follows, which does not require any proprietary dependencies on Google or other third-party providers. The Libre variant can be downloaded from the alternative app store F-Droid.

Messenger Threema now wants to offer another alternative to Google services. Threema Push was released at the end of March, allowing Messenger for Android to be used without Google’s proprietary push service. Now the Swiss developers at Threema GmbH have released a completely Google-free version of the instant messaging service.

Threema Libre: Without Google and open source

As the company has announced in the meantime, after the release of Threema Push they want to go one step further and make Threema Libre available. This version of the messenger should not have any proprietary dependencies on Google or other third-party providers. However, interested users must have downloaded the alternative app store F-Droid to their smartphone.

The complete code of Threema Libre should be open source. In addition, reproducible builds are also supported, which is intended to prove that data leakage to Google is impossible. Threema Libre is a standalone version of the messenger that can be used alongside the normal app from the Threema Shop or Google Play. As with the normal messenger app, a license is required for Threema Libre, which costs a one-off fee of 4.99 euros.

Threema saw increased user traffic in 2021 when messenger competitor Whatsapp changed its terms of service earlier this year. Whatsapp should share its data with the parent company Facebook in the international version. As a result, many users migrated to the competing products Threema and Signal.
