The DioField Chronicle feels like real-time strategy for aristocrats

The DioField Chronicle joins some strategy games at Square Enix this year. One thing does the title, which is on September 22, 2022 appears, but completely different: This is not about the usual round battles, but about real-time tactics! It’s surprisingly refreshing and a lot of fun. The fact that the team also attaches great importance to shining with varied classes is noticed at the latest with the healer unit, which deals out unexpectedly large amounts of magic damage. It doesn’t hurt that either Brandon Campbell, the composer of Game of Thrones, contributes to the atmosphere with his music. If you’re interested in how the game sounds and looks, don’t miss the video above.

The demo starting today August 10, 2022 will be available for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC provides a good overview of what to expect in the full version. In the first fight you have to click through tutorial boxes, but at the end there is an exciting fight in which you are on your own. The world is sketched, the main characters are introduced, and you get a taste for the types of characters that might appear along the way. The “aristocratic” impression mentioned in the title comes from the design, from the setting that forces the protagonists to turn to generals and also from the English dubbing, which incidentally is very successful. Here all the characters are given British accents, which is the idea behind the island DioField makes very obvious.

The Goldhorn is a creature reminiscent of the beings from the Final Fantasy universe, yet with something all its own. This impression can also otherwise be transferred to the world of The DioField Chronicle.

They are also well done dioramas. These are worlds that exist shielded from each other as battlefields and look particularly realistic. The figures, which appear clean and a little groomed, move on it. The characters stand out from the battlefields, which means that you always have a good overview. This is with the so-called RTTS (Real-Time Tactical Battle) is also particularly important. Because in an escort mission, where the AI opponents are also moving, you always have to see clearly which figure is where on the field. Additionally, time stands still while determining a character’s route or choosing their special moves. This way you always have a good overview without feeling overwhelmed.

The final thing about The DioField Chronicle is that we find ourselves in a fantasy world where there are strange creatures that we don’t know much about yet. These are quite obviously inspired by Final Fantasy, but also contain their own characteristics that set them apart. The world thus appears independent and only subtly refers to its inspirations. So we have for example orbs at our side, which are charged with every hit. If their power is strong enough, they unleash powerful abilities that can be extremely useful in battle. It is up to the players themselves to decide whether they should support the protagonists or prefer to distribute area damage.
