patch day
August patch day for Windows 11 is coming up. The update with the patch name KB5016629 is small, but brings welcome changes.
News
In the Windows 11 settings you will find a new update or the computer requires a restart because the August patch has already been downloaded and installed. The download is called KB5016629 and, like the current patch day package for Windows 10, is quite short. The new build number is 22000.856. We summarize what information is available about the new Windows 11 update.
Similar to the patch mentioned for the predecessor, there is a single major bug fix for Windows 11. Microsoft has known since the end of July that the start menu could get stuck. Neither clicking on the start button nor pressing the Windows key on the keyboard resulted in a reaction. Those affected were helped with a server-side fix that is now being rolled out for all computers.
Then security updates are included: for the operating system itself and various Microsoft programs and services, provided they are installed on your computer. Examples include the Microsoft Support Diagnostics Tool, Exchange Server and Active Directory Domain Services, which all had critical vulnerabilities.
The known bugs for the patch KB5016629 have two entries. On the one hand, the Edge browser could cause problems in Internet Explorer mode. Dialog boxes on websites could freeze the corresponding tab. Microsoft is said to be solving the problem on the server side with a new patch download.
On the other hand, there are problems with XML documents that cannot be displayed in the XPS viewer. The causes are still being researched here. These two errors can also be found in the current patch KB5016616 for Windows 10.
