Epic Store: No real free game this time! Are the fat years over?

Instead of a true free game, this time the people behind the Epic Games Store have only announced free bonus content to promote their new Free 2 Play game. They are following a trend that has been emerging for some time. Read all important information here.

Bonus content instead of free game

The new “free game” is just a free bundle for the brand new brawler Rumbleverse. The package called “Boom Boxer Pack” includes a boxing headset, boxing gloves, boxing tank top, boxing pants and boxing boots. You’ll also get an exclusive title card background and border, as well as a 120-minute gameplay fame booster.

With this promotion, Epic Games are promoting their brand new free-2-play title Rumbleverse. in the Melee Battle Royale 40 players fight to be the last to survive. However, they do not use weapons for this, but beat each other up wrestling attacks. Rumbleverse was released today for PC (via Epic Games), PlayStation and Xbox.

While players used to be gifted with blockbusters like Civilization 6 or Borderlands 3, the quality of the free games continues to decline. In the past few weeks and months, players have increasingly had to settle for indie titles such as the Lawn Mowing Simulator or gift packages for titles that were already free. Are the fat years of free games on the Epic Games Store over? While it’s entirely possible that this trend will continue, there’s also the option of holding back the big blockbusters for, say, the holiday season.
