Alone in the Dark: "Reinterpretation" with Soma author in the works at THQ Nordic

THQ Nordic is working on a “reinterpretation” of the classic Alone in the Dark and has brought on board Mikael Hedberg, author of Soma and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

The Swedish studio Pieces Interactive takes care of the development, it is based on the first part of the series.

what it’s about

So that means you play private detective Edward Carnby, who helps Emily Hartwood investigate her uncle’s suicide at the Derceto Mansion.

According to Pieces, the aim of the new Alone in the Dark is to deliver “pure psychological horror”, so the focus is on the four core areas of exploration, combat, puzzles and story.

In this reimagining of the game, Edward and Emily venture beyond the confines of the mansion and travel through portals to forgotten cemeteries and bayous.

Apart from that, there are also changes in the story. Jeremy Hartwood, who hanged himself early in the game in the original, is a missing guest at the mansion, which is now a mental institution for the rich and wealthy.

The core remains the same though, meaning you control either Edward or Emily on their single player adventure. NPCs are supposed to react differently depending on the character’s choice, cutscenes are slightly different, and there are “a few” exclusive areas for each character.

The new Alone in the Dark has been in the works since 2019 and doesn’t have a release date yet, but will be released for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
