5 signs that warn you that your graphics card is about to die

Your computer has been causing problems for a long time and you are afraid that your graphics card will soon give up? MeinMMO presents you with signs that indicate that your GPU could soon fail.

When hardware breaks, it’s always very annoying. But it gets annoying and really expensive when the graphics card in the computer gives up the ghost. Because in addition to the processor, you often pay the most money for the graphics card.

MeinMMO explains the signs of a broken graphics card. Note, however, that you should always check your entire PC before you (in the worst case) buy an expensive new graphics card.

1. Graphic bugs and glitches that keep getting worse

Graphic errors that often appear are a good indicator of a faulty graphics card. Because the graphics card processes textures and data so that you can see something on your monitor.

Graphical problems are mostly found in games and take the form of poorly loaded textures, screen glitches, tearing, or random artifacts appearing on the screen mid-game. Sometimes these errors also occur outside of games in the menus of your operating system.

If you can rule out a Windows update or a new graphics card driver as the cause of the problems, then you can be sure that something is wrong with your graphics card. If you can reproduce the problems with the same graphics card on another system, then it is all the easier to identify the graphics card as the problem.

2. Strange noises from your fans

Are you currently gaming on your PC and the fans on your graphics card are making strange noises while gaming? This can also be an indication that everything is not in the best order with your graphics card.

Broken or faulty fans do not have to be an absolute sign of a broken graphics card, but they can ensure that your graphics card dies faster. Because if the fans can no longer cool the graphics card, the graphics chip will eventually overheat.

With small tools like HWMonitor you can quickly check the temperature of the graphics card.

By the way, a YouTuber was able to significantly improve the cooling performance of his graphics card with little money:

3. Crashes increase when you are playing

If your PC crashes and restarts more often than usual, a broken or damaged graphics card can also be the cause. Especially if your game says goodbye regularly.

However, anything can cause a crash. Also due to bugs in the game or faulty software that you installed with an update. In principle, you should therefore also check other components.

4. Significantly lower frame rate and severe frame drops

In the best case, you play your games with a stable frame rate. The higher the frame rate, the smoother your game will feel. A YouTuber once tested whether a 144 Hz monitor would make you a better shooter player.

If the frame rate drops sharply when playing games or stays in a very low range (the game then “jerks” a lot), your graphics card should normally be able to play the game without any problems, then you should check your graphics card.

However, before you blame the graphics card, you should check other things first. Do you have the latest driver installed or could your computer be suffering from heat issues? You can quickly check the temperatures with tools like HWMonitor.

However, if the temperatures are within normal limits and you can rule out the problems otherwise, then you should take a closer look at your graphics card.

5. Sudden and frequent blue screens

Blue screens occur when Windows notices an error in the system. This can either be an error in the data system (directly in Windows) or an error in the hardware – including the graphics card.
