Final Fantasy 16: Chief Developer defends the combat system

Final Fantasy 16 (Rollenspiel) von Square Enix

Naoki Yoshida, in charge of the development of Final Fantasy 16, gives reasons why a turn-based, slow combat system doesn’t make sense in his eyes.

Not only is Yoshida-San responsible for the glorious resurrection of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, but he has also been called away by his employer, Square Enix, to take the reins in the development of the new Final Fantasy 16.

The introduction of an effective real-time combat system already pissed off many old fans in Final Fantasy 15, and the developers don’t want to return to a turn-based and command-based combat system in the new part either. Yoshi P explained why in an interview with the Japanese website Comic Days.

Someone is always complaining

According to Noaki Yoshida, it is almost impossible to please all players equally. In addition, he assumes that younger generations of gamers in particular can no longer do anything with a command-based combat system.

He says: “The mainstream games these days are intuitive games where you press a button and the character shoots a gun or brandishes a sword, and the traditional RPG style of turn-based command combat is unfamiliar to many. It’s a fact that people are getting less and less into the old-fashioned style of RPGs where you fight by choosing turn commands, that’s why the fighting in Final Fantasy 16 is very action-based.We want to make people around the world believe that Final “Fantasy will be a great game. Of course I don’t think we’ll be able to complete all the requirements. So I told everyone on the team that the first thing we have to do is make something that we think is fun , and make sure it gets to the people who like it.”

Final Fantasy 16 will be released exclusively for the Playstation 5 at a date that has not yet been confirmed in 2023 and will later also be available for the PC. Latest current video: Trailer Awakening
