Sony will soon start an action that is apparently intended to give soloists a taste for multiplayer: On August 27th and 28th, i.e. this weekend, you can play your PS4 and PS5 games for free, even without a subscription to PS Plus, play in online multiplayer. Big multiplayer hits like GTA Online or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which you can see on Sony’s teaser image for the event, are just examples. The promotion applies to all games with online multiplayer.

However, you only get access to the online multiplayer of games that you already own or will buy before then. You cannot play games that are not already in your library. So if you’re already subscribed to PlayStation Plus, there’s no benefit. Conversely, without a subscription during the promotion, you will not have access to all the other benefits that PS Plus offers in addition to online multiplayer.

PS Plus Free Weekend lets you play online multiplayer without a subscription

The PlayStation Plus subscription service has recently undergone some major changes, merging with the gaming and streaming subscription PlayStation Now. Since then, PS Plus has been divided into three levels:

PS Plus Essential: The first level roughly corresponds to the previous PS Plus. Here you get access to the online multiplayer of your games as well as monthly games that you can play during your subscription at no additional cost. In August these are Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Little Nightmares. There are also other extras such as cloud storage, exclusive discounts and Share Play, which allows you to play online with friends as if you were in the same room, even for single player games. The price is €8.99 per month or €59.99 for an annual subscription.

With PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium you get access to numerous big hits.

With PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium you get access to numerous big hits.

PS Plus extras: With PS Plus Extra, for €13.99 per month or €99.99 per year, you also get an extensive games catalog with hundreds of PS4 and PS5 titles, similar to those previously included in PlayStation Now. The selection includes both big AAA hits and indie insider tips, with new games being added all the time, of course. For example, Metro Exodus, Dead By Daylight and several parts of the Yakuza series have recently been added. With PS Plus Extra you also get access to the so-called Ubisoft+ Classics, which include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, for example.

PS Plus Premium: With the premium subscription for €16.99 per month or €119.99 per year, you can also use the classic games catalog with hundreds of titles from older PlayStation generations. Here you will find, for example, God of War 1 to 3 as well as God of War Ascension, Mafia 1 and 2 in the Definitive Edition and various games from the Resident Evil series. You can also test a selection of major PS4 and PS5 titles free of charge for a limited time, currently such as Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077 or Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. You can also use cloud streaming, with which you can stream many PS4, PS3 and PS2 games directly to your console or PC, without any installation.
