The planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft’s Xbox division for 68.7 billion US dollars is currently being prepared, while competition authorities from various governments are critically examining the project.

From a player perspective, there is also the question of which titles from the Acitivsion and Blizzard portfolio will be released for PlayStation consoles once the acquisition is completed. So PlayStation had previously had a marketing agreement regarding Call of Duty, which offered beta access to the games on the Sony consoles, for example. In the future, however, the series could only be available on Xbox and PC.

After Xbox boss Phil Spencer already wrote in January via Twitter, among other things, that all existing contracts would be respected and Call of Duty should remain on PlayStation, he reiterated this statement again in a statement The Verge. Spencer is quoted as follows:

In January, we sent Sony a signed agreement that guarantees Call of Duty – on par in terms of features and content – for the PlayStation for at least a few years beyond the existing Sony contract.

This offer goes far beyond typical agreements in the games industry, Spencer continued.

Activision Blizzard’s reputation has been severely damaged in recent years after the company was accused of rampant discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
