The Sandman: This is how The Sandman continues

Netflix: The Sandman - Lucifer and Dream.

It took 30 years for Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics to become known to the general public in the form of a Netflix series. And the viewing figures are good enough that the question quickly arose as to when the next season would be greenlit. So far, Netflix hasn’t said anything about it. Should there be a second season, it is very likely that the story will at least roughly follow the comic template.

Sandman – the time of the fog

If season 2 runs similarly to the first season of The Sandman, the comics “Dream Country” and “Season of Mists” should be adapted in it – possibly even volume 5, “A Game of You”. Dream Country is a kind of short story collection in comic form, two parts of which were already seen in episode 11 of the first season. If Season 2 were split similarly to Season 1, that would leave four to five episodes each for “Season of Mist” and “A Game of You,” in which the following happens:

Sometime after the events of season one, Destiny, the eldest of the Endless, calls his

Siblings together for a family session. There is a fight between Dream and Desire, with Desire accusing Dream of having left his beloved Nada in Hell long enough. Dream finally agrees to go get Nada, even if it means meeting Lucifer again, whom he snubbed badly the last time they met.

But the Lord of Hell has a nasty surprise for Morpheus. Lucifer chased all sinners and demons out of Hell and abdicated. He gives Dream the key to hell as a final gift that will hopefully cost the Dream King his existence. While Lucifer is on vacation, Dream has to deal with a multitude of gods and demons, all of whom lay claim to Hell.

If there is still some time left after divine intrigues and demonic intrigues, the production team could take care of the story from the fifth volume of Sandman “A Game of You”. The focus is on Barbie, who is already known from the first season. After her experiences with Rose Walker, she can no longer dream and moved to New York. There she is given a strange talisman that causes dream and reality to begin to merge.

Sandman – new characters in season 2

Of course, there would also be new characters that Dream will meet. Above all, two other members of the Endless: Destiny and Delirium.

Destiny is the eldest brother of the family and the least involved in mortal affairs. In his book chained to him is contained the fate of the entire universe. Destiny’s job is to read this to the end. However, sometimes this text can change. It will be interesting to see what Destiny will look like in The Sandman season 2.

In the comics, he is a tall man clad in a gray robe. However, Destiny is the only one of the Endless not created by Neil Gaiman. So if the rights to his appearance aren’t cleared for the series, a very different version of the character could await viewers.

At the other end of the sibling band is Delirium, the youngest of the Endless. A long time ago she was called Delight until something changed her forever. Delirium is nice, but very planned at the same time. As one of the younger Endless, she keeps getting involved in people’s affairs. Of her siblings, she especially fell in love with Death and Desire. Delirium has a strained relationship with Dream. He can’t stand her plan and in return she’s afraid of him. What is particularly exciting about the depiction of delirium is whether and how the series makers manage to show their constant change.

In addition to the two new Endless, there are other characters that will play a bigger role in the Sandman universe. Among others, the Norse god Loki, the cat goddess Bast, the witch Thessaly and the fairy Nuala. The lost brother of the Endless is also mentioned again, although he only has his big appearance in another story.

Is season 2 coming at all?

However, the question remains whether The Sandman will be renewed at all. Netflix is silent, which probably makes even Neil Gaiman nervous. By all accounts, The Sandman was a success for the streaming service. Nevertheless, Gaiman has already announced that, if in doubt, the series would also be presented to other streaming providers. Amazon Studios, with whom Neil Gaiman has already worked on Good Omens, would certainly be an option here. An alternative would be the Warner service HBO Max, after all, the comic book template of The Sandman is published by DC.

The fact that Netflix is so hesitant to give the green light for a second season could also be due to the production costs of The Sandman. These are pretty high at $15 million per episode. The question is whether Netflix wants and can afford that, no matter how successful the series is. However, producer David S. Goyer seems confident that The Sandman will somehow continue. According to him, scripts for season 2 are currently in the works.
