Assassin’s Creed Mirage: New Adventure in Baghdad goes back to basics

Activision Blizzard: Phil Spencer pleased with acquisition progress

Today, Ubisoft celebrated the 15th anniversary of Assassin’s Creed at Ubisoft Forward. In addition to the future of the series, the new Assassin’s Creed Mirage was also in the foreground.

15 years of Assassin’s Creed! Crazy how time flies (and how old we feel now), we still remember our first assassin missions in the skin of Altair. This is exactly the feeling that Ubisoft Bordeaux wants to rekindle in us, because the latest installment in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, promises a return to the roots of the series.

In Mirage you take on the role of Hidden Basim known from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, with the action taking place 20 years before Valhalla. With Baghdad, a city is finally moving into the focus of events. A smaller, winding area should focus on stealth and parcours, as in the first parts.

And even if we’ve only seen a render trailer so far, it shows directly in which direction the atmosphere is going. Market stalls are thrown over on chases, city walls are climbed and powder clouds are used to escape. At the same time, developers want to maintain the agility of the newer parts. There should be something from every Assassin’s Creed in Mirage.

The smaller setting also means that Ubisoft Bordeaux can focus entirely on linear storytelling. Not only the historical Baghdad is in the foreground with its golden age in the year 861. Basim’s character is also examined in more detail. We learn how the young street thief first meets his mentor Roshan and eventually becomes the Hidden in a playable coming-of-age story.

Incidentally, this is spoken by none other than Hollywood actress Shohreh Aghdashloo (24, The Expanse, Arcane). With her succinct voice, she guides Basim to his destiny. In addition, the falcon returns as a gameplay mechanic. You can use it to scout out the area and mark enemies. But be careful: resourceful archers can target him and knock him out of the sky if you’re not careful.

Of course, with a focus on old virtues, the assassin missions, in which you eliminate characters important to the story, should not be missing. There will be so-called black box missions for this, in which you have several ways to choose how you can disable a target. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released in 2023 and is said to cost just under €50.

What do you think of Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s approach? The right step or rather a step backwards?
