Octopath Traveler 2 was one of the surprise announcements that came out in the recent NintendoDirect. In another unexpected twist for this sequel, it’s looking to ramp up everything from its predecessor in a number of ways. Interestingly, that includes the number of platforms the game will be available for at launch.

Square Enix has announced that Octopath Traveler 2 will also be available for PS5, PS4 and PC (via Steam) at launch, in addition to Nintendo Switch. That is curious for many reasons, but mainly because the Octopath Traveler original has not yet been released for PlayStation. However, it was released for Xbox, but it must not have done very well on the Microsoft platform, as its sequel has not been announced for Xbox.

Meanwhile, several new details about the sequel’s world, characters, and gameplay have also been revealed. Square Enix describes it as “a vibrant environment that is made up of eastern and western continents divided by the sea.”

“It is a time of commercial and industrial revolution: large ships navigate busy sea lanes, and the power of steam has given birth to new technologies. Some people live in luxury, cheering on the glamorous stars of the stage. Others struggle every day, made to cry by war, plague and poverty.

Over the course of the game, you’ll be able to traverse each area of ​​this diverse world, uncovering the secrets and stories hidden everywhere.”

Among the new characters are: Hiraki, the Warrior; Agnea, the dancer; Partitio, the Merchant; Osvald, the scholar; Throne, the thief; Temenos, the cleric; Ochette, the Hunter; Castti, the apothecary. And yes, Square Enix says that it is addressing one of the biggest problems with the previous game: in the sequel, the characters will interact with each other on a much deeper level, which will also affect the story.

“One of the most common requests from Octopath Traveler players was that they wanted to see the different protagonists interact with each other more. Consider that feedback well and truly received. In Octopath Traveler 2, there are more interactions between the different party members. Additional stories will unfold between the leads as their journey progresses, deepening the characters and their relationships.”

Also, unlike the original game, each character in Octopath Traveler 2 You’ll also have access to two path actions instead of one, allowing you to interact with NPCs and the world around you in different ways. In addition, this encourages replayability.

Interestingly, the route action your character chooses will depend on a new cycle of day and night. For example, during the day, Hikari can challenge NPCs to duels to learn new skills, while at night, he can bribe people to discover hidden objects or learn secrets about people.

Meanwhile, the battle system brings back familiar mechanics from the original game, including Break, Boost, and BP, while also introducing a new mechanic called Latent Powers. These are essentially ultimate abilities that can be unleashed in battles once a bar fills up.

Finally, Square Enix says that the HD-2D visual style has also seen several improvements. “The environments are more detailed, with more varied camera angles,” explains the company. “The character sprites are more varied, with even more animations to convey their emotions. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.”
