At last night’s State of Play, Team Ninja (Nioh, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin) unveiled a new open word action RPG. This has been in development for seven years and is called Rise of the Ronin. As the name suggests, in it we play a ronin, a wandering warrior who has no obligations.

As a ronin in the midst of chaos

Rise of Ronin is set at the end of the Edo period, also known as Bakumatsu. During this period of upheaval, Japan not only experiences oppression by rulers and civil war between the Tokugawa shogunate and enemy factions, but also grapples with disease and Western influence.

The latter is already clear in the first trailer. Not only traditional elements can be seen, but also western firearms, people and buildings:

Rise of Ronin wants to be ruthless

It can also be seen in the trailer that blood is not spared in the fights. How demanding the combat system will be wasn’t clear when it was announced, but it already promises dramatic action that won’t shy away from anything. Fumohiko Yasuda, Director and President of Team Ninja, speaks at least of an “epic and uncompromising journey at the beginning of a new era in Japan”, which also takes up particularly dark chapters:

Combining all the skills and knowledge we’ve learned over the years, this time we want to take it to a new level and comprehensively portray the most serious revolution in the history of Japan, including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many dread.

The open world is designed to continually evolve throughout this journey. We should also be able to make our own decisions as Ronin. For example, it is up to us whether we help the people we meet or whether we fight them.

When will Rise of Ronin be released? When the game will appear exactly, was not said. All that is known so far is that it will be released in 2024 on consoles exclusively for the PlayStation 5.

What do you think of Rise of Ronin? Do you like the setting, or do you prefer it to be more traditional, like in Ghost of Tsushima for example?
