Modern Warfare 2: Gunsmith 2.0 – More customization, overall unlocks, less grind

What is Gunsmith 2.0 about? Gunsmith itself is nothing more than a new form of weapon editor introduced with CoD: Modern Warfare in 2019, bringing with it numerous new gun customization options. With Modern Warfare 2, the Gunsmith gets a general overhaul, which in principle culminates in a kind of Gunsmith 2.0.

So far, only small snippets of information about this feature of Modern Warfare 2 were available, but now the developers at Infinity Ward are presenting the new Gunsmith in detail. This promises more options and at the same time easier unlocks of the numerous weapon components.

This is what defines the new Gunsmith editor in Modern Warfare 2: Gunsmith 2.0 is no longer just about individual guns, but rather about different weapon platforms and the components that go with them.

Let’s take the M4 assault rifle as an example. But the Gunsmith still offers tons of sights, shoulder rests, grips or magazines. However, the slot for the receiver (housing) is new. With each new receiver unlocked, the M4 can be fundamentally changed – into other weapons and even other weapon categories (e.g. SMGs or Snipers) based on the same platform. These include the M16.

The cool thing about it: The attachments and components are either unlocked for all members of the platform family, or for all weapons. This means attachments unlocked on the M4 can also be used directly on the M16 or on an SMG based on the M4 platform – and vice versa. Or just on all other weapons in the game. And that saves players quite a bit of grind. For example, you no longer have to unlock a grip for each individual variant or offshoot of the M4, but only for one. You can then use it on any weapon on the corresponding platform.
