Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is finally available to play today, ahead of release. The beta starts on September 16, and the open beta is coming this weekend.

Santa Monica, California – Modern Warfare 2 will finally be released soon. This week you can put your hands on the latest Call of Duty. In several phases, all players can put the multiplayer of CoD MW2 through its paces as a beta. However, the different time windows and versions are quite confusing. We’ll give you all the dates for all platforms and explain what Activision’s Open Beta and Early Access are all about.

Modern Warfare 2 Beta: Times of Early Access and Open Beta

When does the MW2 beta start? The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 beta will start on September 16, 2022, but not at the same time for all platforms. There are different release dates depending on the system (PlayStation or Xbox). On top of that, it is also important whether you pre-order (early access) or simply want to play the free open beta.

These are the CoD MW2 beta times for this weekend:

• September 16-17: PS5/PS4 – For Only Early access (pre-order and codes)
• September 18-20: PS5/PS4 – open beta (free for everyone, no requirements)

Will there be another beta for Xbox and PC? The first beta phase is for Sony console players only. A week later, however, the 2nd phase of the beta of CoD Modern Warfare 2 will take place. This time Microsoft consoles and PC players (Steam and Battle.net) are also allowed to play – PS4/PS5 players can even participate a second time.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – all beta dates for PS5 & PS4, Xbox and PC

Here is an overview of the dates of the beta phases for all platforms:

• Early Access for PlayStation: September 16, 7:00 p.m. German time, until September 17.
• Early Access for PC and Xbox: September 22, 7:00 p.m. German time, until September 23.
• PlayStation Open Beta: Part 1: September 18, 7:00 p.m. German time, until September 20 / Part 2: September 22, 7:00 p.m. German time, until September 26
• Open Beta for PC and Xbox: September 24, 7:00 p.m. German time, until September 26

How to get early access to the beta: Get guaranteed access when you pre-order Modern Warfare 2 – then you will receive a beta key (for physical pre-orders) or be activated directly for the beta (for digital pre-orders). Alternatively, with a bit of luck, you can dust off promo keys in raffles or (official) giveaways from streamers and other influencers.

This is how the open beta for MW2 works: On Open Beta days, you can play Modern Warfare even if you haven’t bought the game (and don’t intend to). The latest CoD is then available for all players to download free of charge in the respective platform store.

Modern Warfare 2: Preload – who can participate and what can you show?

When is the MW2 beta preload? Yes, there is a preload for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta. You can already download the beta client this Wednesday, September 14, 2022. The beta will be available in the store at 7 p.m. German time.

• Beta preload: 14.09. (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. German time
• Preload only for pre-orders on PS4/PS5

However, this week’s preload is only available to PlayStation players who pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The open beta this weekend for PS4/PS5 will probably take place without a preload. Whether PC and Xbox players will also receive a preload for test phase 2 next week is not yet known.

How big is the beta? So far we only know the required hard drive size for PCs: 25 GB. According to leaks, the versions for consoles should also be around this value. The PS5/PS4 version should require a maximum of 30 GB of free memory.

Do you need PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold? Yes, you actually need a PlayStation Plus subscription for the beta. Active Xbox Live Gold subscription required on Xbox. At least in Germany this is regulated for youth protection reasons.

Is there an NDA? No, you are not bound by a non-disclosure clause or anything like that. You can freely talk about, show and stream the new content from the start of the beta on September 16, 2022.

Unlock beta rewards for participating in CoD Modern Warfare 2 upon release

Will the progress carry over from the beta? No, with the release version you have to start completely from level zero. However, you will receive some bonuses if you have participated in the beta. All CoD Modern Warfare 2 beta rewards are now known. Here is an overview of all weapons, skins, items:

How to get the beta rewards in MW2: Just play the beta to level up. You will then automatically receive the rewards when you reach the rank in the finished CoD MW2 when it is released on October 28th.

Modern Warfare 2 Beta content, maps and modes

What content does the Modern Warfare 2 Beta offer? Not much is known about the exact content of the two beta weekends. But there will be enough gambling fodder for the two test phases. These contents are already confirmed:

• 6vs6 multiplayer is played
• Several maps and different modes are available – here you will find all known, new maps from MW2
• Crossplay available in week 2 (09/22-09/26)
• Weaponsmith can be tested
• In the beta you can unlock rewards for the finished game

Modern Warfare 2 shows Gunsmith 2.0 – This is how the new weapon editor works in CoD MW2: Gunsmith 2.0 is no longer just about individual weapons, but rather about different weapon platforms and the associated components.

The cool thing about the new editor: The attachments and components are either unlocked for all members of the platform family, or for all weapons. This means attachments unlocked on the M4 can also be used directly on the M16 or on an SMG based on the M4 platform – and vice versa.

If you play on the PC and you are not sure whether or how well the Battlefield 2042 beta will run on your system – your computer must be able to handle this:
