Warzone 2 has revealed its biggest secret: DMZ is coming to Call of Duty for free

What is DMZ in CoD? The new Warzone 2.0 mode, which has been kept secret for a long time, is hidden behind the name. So far there have only been leaks about DMZ, but on September 15th Call of Duty revealed that the hotly debated mode is really coming. Rumors previously said that DMZ will be paid or only part of paid title CoD MW 2 will be.

The most important information about DMZ at a glance:

  • DMZ will be an extraction mode in the new Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0
  • You receive a mission, are dropped off on the new Warzone map “Al Mazrah” and have to leave the combat area after completing your task
  • Missions like rescuing hostages or securing radioactive material are available, but there are other jobs
  • On the map you then fight against many AI enemies (NPCs), but also against real players who have the same or similar goals as you
  • You can then decide whether you want to chase other players or avoid them, whether you want to go straight to the goal or rather explore the map
  • In DMZ you collect loot (weapons and equipment) and keep the unlocks in normal Warzone 2 (you also take the EXP with you for the Battle Pass)
  • The best loot is the most heavily guarded – if you die, you usually lose your loot in extraction games (even your character in some games)

When is DMZ release in CoD? Coinciding with the release of Warzone 2 and the start of Season 1 (together with Modern Warfare 2) on November 16, 2022, DMZ will be released. The new mode will be completely free, so DMZ is Free2Play. Anyone can try the hardcore experience. Activision has promised, to reveal more about the previously well-kept mode shortly. But we already give you the most important information on ingame.de.

The release of DMZ comes just a few weeks after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which celebrates its release on October 28th. By the way, starting today (September 16th) you can test the traditional multiplayer of Modern Warfare 2. Here all information about the Open Beta for everyone in MW2.

Warzone 2.0 for the really tough: CoD wants to torture hardcore players with DMZ for free

The extraction mode is reminiscent of these games: Do you know the shooters “Escape from Tarkov” or “Hunt: Showdown” from the German developer Crytec? Then you are already familiar with the gameplay. But instead of diving into a fantasy western like Hunt, hunting demons there and bringing their remains to safety, you save hostages in DMZ or fulfill other tasks of a modern special unit.

This is why DMZ is so hardcore: Extraction games exude a thrill of their own. There can be an enemy lurking around every corner who’s been watching you the whole time. If you die then, your achievements of the last few hours – in the worst case of the last weeks or months – are gone. Anyone who, in turn, eliminates an opposing player and steals his loot from the map shortly before he flees, will be rewarded with a veritable rush of happy hormones.

So it’s high risk, but also high reward. This genre has become increasingly popular in recent years. For the first time, Call of Duty is bringing AI opponents to the Warzone map on such a large scale, making life difficult for you in DMZ. You can also find the NPCs in regular Warzone matches – in the so-called strongholds (but in much smaller numbers).

Another innovation that takes the well-known SpecOps mode to the extreme are the new MW2 Raids: this endgame activity, known from Destiny or WOW, also comes to Call of Duty for the first time with Modern Warfare 2.
