Twitch: Decision made on casino streams

Twitch (Unternehmen) von Twitch

Streaming platform Twitch announces via its Twitter account that it will update its gambling policy on October 18th. The company is thus taking a stand in the current debate.

The statement comes after popular content creators such as Pokimane, HasanAbi and Asmongold recently called on Twitch to ban slot content on the platform. While the hashtag #TwitchStopGambling was trending on Twitter earlier in the week, the popular streamers even discussed boycotting the platform over the holiday season, which would mean a huge loss of ad revenue for Twitch.

Twitch bans gambling sites – sports betting and poker still allowed

“We will be issuing a policy update on October 18th to ban the streaming of gambling sites that contain slots, roulette or craps games that are not licensed in the United States or other countries that provide adequate consumer protections.” it in the statement. These sites include, but are not limited to, Stake, Rollbit, Duelbits and Roobet, which Twitch may “identify” as part of the policy’s rollout. The statement explicitly points out that providers who focus on sports betting, fantasy sports and poker are still allowed.

Not only Twitch, but also streamers who transmit gambling content have been repeatedly criticized for this in the past. Just a few days ago, it came to light that celebrity streamer Sliker scammed its viewers and other streamers out of over $200,000, among other things kotaku reported. Sliker, known for playing shooters like Valorant and Counter Strike: Global Offensive, admitted via a stream to embezzling viewer donation money and using it to fund his gambling addiction. Furthermore, he explains that gambling for skins in CS:GO brought him into gambling.

Slots category in the top 10

For some time now, Twitch has been trying in vain to combat gambling content on its platform. It was only in 2021 that Twitch updated its policies to prevent the redistribution of invite links or referral codes from slot, roulette or dice game providers. However, this has changed little, let alone stopped the spread of gambling on Twitch.

Like Bloomberg reported, the gambling business is thriving on Twitch. This is mainly due to the fact that providers even attract large streamers such as xQc with sponsorship contracts. So it is that the streamer regularly broadcasts gambling for over 70,000 viewers and is said to have even signed contracts with crypto gambling sites. The slot machines category on Twitch is currently in the top ten with over 86,000 live viewers most popular Sections on the streaming platform.
