Govee wall light, wall panels and LED strips tested – light up your gaming room

Govee wall light, wall panels and LED strips tested - light up your gaming room

I don’t know how you feel about this, but a room can add quite a bit of atmosphere with the right lighting. Especially when you’re playing, watching a movie, or listening to music. It’s not for nothing that I’ve become so used to the Ambilight from Philips televisions that I don’t want to be without it anymore. Independent of televisions, Govee has a whole range of luminous products in its portfolio that are intended to create a mood in your room, whether for gaming or just as background lighting.

Govee’s options are flexible enough and I was able to take a closer look at three of them – the Glide wall light, the Glide Hexa Pro LED light panels and the neon LED strips – and find out whether they were any good or just expensive plastic junk. Let’s put it this way: I’m more impressed by it than I would have thought beforehand.

The three test candidates

First of all, let’s take a closer look at the three test candidates mentioned, the structure and the like is discussed below. Let’s start with that Govee Glide wall light (99.99 euros). The set effectively consists of several straight tube-like elements and some curve elements. This can be used to create different designs depending on the shape you want or what your space allows. You don’t have to set up the full program either, you can just place the end piece earlier if you like.

The wall lamp can display up to 57 colors at once and a total of 16 million colors. As far as this color aspect is concerned, all three products are similar and allow different color combinations and multicolor effects.

You assemble the wall lights piece by piece.

the Govee Glide Hexa Pro LED Light Panels (249.99 euros) come with ten light panels, but according to Govee, your construct can theoretically be expanded to up to 25 panels if you want to spend the money for it. Here, too, you stick the individual panels together, the style later results in a nice looking 3D light effect.

Flexibility is also guaranteed here, because you can arrange the existing panels in different shapes and thus create different patterns on your wall.

That’s the one left Govee neon LED strips (85.99 euros), which is basically what the name says. A flexible light strip that can be attached around shelves, for example, or fits well in corners due to its small diameter. The silicone cover is hard-wearing and thus also allows for different shapes. Hang it up however you like, there are few limits.

And since that is more important than ever these days, here are the power consumption figures:

  • Glide wall light: 36 watts
  • Glide Hexa Pro light panels: 72 watts, 2.4 watts per panel, 24 watts for a set of 10
  • LED strip: 48 watts

How does the structure work?

The structure of the three products is similar to a certain extent, but also offers some differences depending on the situation. Basically, Govee recommends that before you attach it to the wall, you first put everything together in the desired shape, put it on the floor, on the table or wherever and see if everything works. Plug in and it lights up? test passed. A sensible recommendation, nothing would be more annoying than putting everything on the wall only to then have to take it down again because it doesn’t work.

Govee Glide wall lamp: You can put the included elements together as you like, as mentioned, as many of them as you want. Don’t want to use all the parts included? No problem. For example, you can attach the elements to the wall behind a monitor or – like me – also lead them around a picture hanging on the wall.

The wall panels even come with a small spirit level.

All of the products used here have one thing in common: you stick them to the wall. Adhesive pads are attached to each element (Tesa Powerstrips are an obvious comparison), which should also be easy to remove later. In this case, you attach the next element of the wall light to the previous one, press it against the wall for about 30 seconds and it should be firmly in place. Little by little, the finished shape of the wall light is created, it’s not complicated.

Govee Glide Hexa Pro LED Light Panels: This is a bit more complex with the light panels than with the wall light. But this is where the Govee app comes into play, which helps you with the setup. Select a shape there and you will be guided step by step through the application. Which is very helpful, because you have to connect each panel to the previous one with a cable and should use the right slots if possible. With the help of the interactive instructions and the corresponding numbers, this can be done quite quickly overall.

There are different shapes and colors that you can mix and match.

The attachment is similar to the wall light. Place the individual panels next to each other on the wall as shown in the app and press them against them for around 30 seconds. Sits and doesn’t wobble. Did you plug something wrong? You can remove the panel without the wall bracket and make corrections, then snap it back into place. Well thought out.

Govee Neon LED Strips: The LED strip is also easy to attach to the wall. As mentioned, it is quite flexible and easy to bend, and there are enough wall brackets included to attach it stably to the wall. One difference to the others: The wall brackets here can also be screwed on, which is definitely not wrong depending on the surface. If you want to be so flexible and install the LED strip for summer nights on the terrace, you can definitely do that. Otherwise, Govee also has special outdoor light strips to offer. Suitable screws and dowels are included, Govee provides you with everything you need.

At home in the living room, however, I didn’t need any screws, the LED strip could also be easily attached to the wall around two shelves with the adhesive pads and holds up quite well there.

The LED strip is easy to attach.

How easy is the setup?

The setup is also relatively the same for all products. Basically, you can plug in all of them and it will light up in front of you. In order to unfold the full potential, you need the Govee app for your smartphone. It is necessary to create an account, after which the products are checked via Bluetooth. If you set up the WLAN connection, you can also install updates. You can also pair the products with Alexa and Google Assistant and control them via voice control.

You can set it up and operate it using the app.

Once you have everything set up, the full range of possibilities open up to you. On the one hand there are numerous ready-made patterns to choose from, some individually for each product, on the other hand you have the option of defining your own color combinations, patterns and the like. This is where you can get really creative and customize everything to your own liking if none of the pre-made options appeal to you. You can see all changes, new modes and so on after a second or two and can try them out more or less in real time. Everything reacts quickly to your inputs and can be controlled really comfortably. The music mode, however, makes use of integrated microphones and thus reacts to ambient noise.

How does it sync with Razer Synapse 3?

Individual Govee products, in this case the wall panels and LED strip, also support syncing with Razer Synapse 3, so they can be paired with the sounds you’re listening to on your PC. The prerequisites for this are, of course, the Razer Synapse 3 software on the one hand and the Govee desktop app on the other.

The fact that the Govee products can only be connected to a 2.4 GHz WLAN network is a bit less than ideal. To pair and use with Razer Synapse 3, however, all devices must be on the same WiFi network. If you otherwise use a 5 GHz WLAN network, you will have to switch. But once that is the case, there are no problems. Search for the Govee product using the desktop app, pair it and you can make adjustments to how each light responds to sounds via the Chroma Visualizer.

The extent to which you like it is ultimately a matter of taste and also depends to a certain extent on your settings. If you want to have the right room lighting for what is happening on the screen, you can definitely consider it here.

Is it worth buying?

Both as lighting around living room shelves and on the wall next to my PC, I like the wall lights, panels and LED strips more than I would have thought. I’m a fan of mood lighting anyway, see the Ambilight mentioned at the beginning, and the products tested here can definitely provide some mood lighting effects. And that also depends on your mood, they are extremely flexible, but of course also have their price. In view of this, it is gratifying that I did not find any reason for major complaints during testing. Everything works great after the first setup, the control via app is intuitive and you can go into great detail if you want. It’s a little annoying that only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is supported, but if you’re running both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, that shouldn’t matter much.

So if you have the necessary change and would like to equip your room or several rooms with lighting, there is little reason not to think about a purchase. Govee definitely offers enough choice for different scenarios and tastes.

You will find the lights mentioned here and many more directly at Govee.
