Noctua confirms coolers are AM5 compatible and announces free upgrades for low-profile coolers and older models

Noctua AM5

from Maximilian Hohm
In a new press release, Noctua has clarified the situation surrounding the CPU cooler and Socket AM5. All of the manufacturer’s products, with the exception of the NH-L9a-AM4 and the NM-AM4-L9aL9i, which are compatible with AM4, can be used on socket AM5 without further modifications. Read below what the manufacturer offers for users with older Noctua coolers and how you can make your Noctua cooler AM5-compatible.

AMD’s upcoming Socket AM5 has the same hole spacing as Socket AM4, so many CPU coolers will be compatible with the socket without new mounting hardware. However, there are still exceptions due to the backplates that AM5 requires, so there is no general solution and some coolers fit while others require modified hardware. The cooling specialist Noctua from Austria has now commented on the facts and would like to provide its buyers with definitive answers and security.

Arctic MX-5: Discontinued sale – successor MX-6 already in shops

Noctua confirms that all AM4-compatible Noctua models are upwards compatible with the exception of the NH-L9a-AM4 and the NM-AM4-L9aL9i with socket AM5. Since the mounting hardware of the coolers is screwed directly into the backplates and the hole spacing and threads between AM4 and AM5 are identical, all SE-AM4 models and all Noctua coolers purchased since 01/2019 already offer full AM5 compatibility. The owners of such coolers do not need any additional hardware and can simply use the coolers on their AM5 platform, provided they are sufficient for the TDP. For the NH-L9a-AM4 and the NM-AM4-L9aL9i, the NM-AM5-L9aL9i set should be available from the end of October so that these two coolers can continue to be used on socket AM5.

Owners of older coolers who do not yet have AM4-compatible mounting hardware can purchase it free of charge upon presentation of proof of purchase at Noctua relate. Depending on the destination country, shipping costs may apply. If, on the other hand, there is no longer any receipt or the hardware is needed as soon as possible, the kits can be obtained from specialist retailers for a service fee of EUR 7.90.

Noctua’s CEO Roland Mossig justifies this approach not only with the money saved compared to buying a new cooler, but also with the “reduction of unnecessary waste” and the “saving of valuable resources”. The update kits for socket AM5 should be available from the end of October directly via Noctua’s website can be obtained. On the other hand, an adapted version of the NH-L9a cooler, which is directly AM5-compatible, is expected in the first quarter of 2023.
