The Dead Space remake comes without camera cuts and loading screens

When playing Dead Space Remake, you shouldn’t be bothered by camera cuts or loading screens.

The exception, of course, are moments when you die, there is no other way, otherwise the developers of the new edition strive for as much immersion as possible.

How to expand and improve Dead Space

This is the subject of a new one contribution on EA’s website. In the remake, for example, Isaac also has a voice, just like in parts two and three.

“And we brought some characters that were more incidental and only appeared in the audio logs, like Dr. Cross, to the screen,” explains creative director Roman Campos-Oriola. “Other characters we wanted to give a little more meaning and background. An example of this is Nicole. That’s why we’re creating a whole layer of narrative side quests, where you learn things like what happened to Nicole during the outbreak.”

Modern hardware and the use of the Frostbite engine provide improvements in several respects. “Every asset, every animation, every texture, every effect, every enemy behavior was recreated in the engine,” emphasizes Campos-Oriola.

You have more freedom of movement in the sections with zero gravity, the lighting has also been improved (highlights and shadows) and the damage is also more realistic.

“When you start shooting, you see the skin and flesh being ripped off the enemy’s body,” he explains. “Then you see the bones underneath, which you can also cut through, just like the limbs. It looks amazing and players get direct feedback on the damage they’re dealing.”

“The entire game is also created in a single sequential shot,” adds Senior Producer Philippe Ducharme. “From the start to the end of the game there are no camera cuts or loading screens – unless you die. The Ishimura is completely connected within itself, so you can walk from point A to point Z, explore the entire ship and visit places at you’ve been to to find things you might not have noticed the first time. This is all new. It’s a seamless gameplay experience.”

It was always important for the team to appreciate the original and to remain true to it.

“We want players to feel like they’re experiencing Dead Space for the first time, even if they were already fans of the game,” says Campos-Oriola. “But we also want to give others who don’t know the game the opportunity to experience Dead Space in a version where the gameplay, look and sound are much more modern.”

Dead Space Remake will be released on January 27, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
