Apple mastermind Steve Jobs dies and Ati brings the Radeon X1000 – that happened on October 5th. Every day, PC Games Hardware takes a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

… 2005: Nvidia’s Geforce 7 has dominated the high-end graphics market for months. On October 5, 2005, Ati introduced its counterpart: the Radeon X1000 based on the R520 chip. The GPU is heavily optimized for DirectX 9.0c and the shader model 3.0, uses 16 pipelines and offers a 256-bit wide memory interface via which fast GDDR3 RAM is connected. Ati also praises the efficient architecture and numerous functions for video acceleration. The Radeon X1300, X1600 and X1800 variants are coming onto the market first, cards with the top model also beat Nvidia’s flagship Geforce 7800 GTX in the XT version – but they also cost around 500 euros. Five years later, AMD is officially burying the Ati brand – to mark the occasion, we have put together a gallery of the most important Ati graphics cards for you.

… 2011: There is also sad news on this day and unfortunately it again affects Apple and above all its founder and longtime boss Steve Jobs. On this day he loses his long battle with cancer and dies at the age of 56. Despite some controversy about his person and Apple’s company policy, he is considered one of the most influential and creative minds of our time.
