Geforce RTX 4090 unboxed: Raff unpacks the Founders Edition

from Manuel Christa
We present: The first pictures of an RTX 4090 Founders Edition in the wild! The outrageously expensive top model of the new Ada Lovelace series has arrived at our editorial office and graphic guru Raff is personally unpacking it in front of the camera.

Nvidia’s new flagship is the RTX 4090 and will be available in stores on October 12th for 1,949 euros RRP. The RTX 4090 uses the GPU dubbed AD102 with 128 SMs, 16,384 FP32 shaders, 512 tensor cores and 128 RT cores. The base clock is 2.23 GHz, the boost is 2.52 GHz. The GDDR6X memory (24 GiB) has a speed of 21 GBit/s and is connected with 384 bits. That means about 1 TB/s memory bandwidth, similar to the 3090 Ti. Nvidia specifies a TGP (Total Graphics Power) of 450 watts, the power consumption can be adjusted to up to 660 watts via the 12VHPWR connection and PEG.

Below the Geforce RTX 4090, two variants of the RTX 4080 will follow in November. Nvidia distinguishes between 12 GiB and 16 GiB versions, but the two variants differ not only in the graphics memory, but also in important technical parameters. The 16 GiB model (MSRP: €1,469) uses AD103 and has 76 SMs, 9,782 shaders, 304 tensor cores and 76 RT cores. The base clock is 2.21 GHz, the boost is 2.51 GHz. The 16 GB GDDR6X has a speed of 23 Gbps connected to 256 bits and a memory bandwidth of 736 GB/s. The TGP is 320 watts and the maximum configurable TGP is 516 watts.

The third Lovelace card is a 12 GiB Geforce RTX 4080 (RRP: 1,049 euros). As a reminder, this card is rumored to be launched as the Geforce RTX 4070/Ti. AD104 currently has 60 SMs, 7,680 shaders, 240 tensor cores and 60 RT cores. The base clock is 2.31 GHz and the boost is 2.61 GHz. So the smallest card not only has the biggest boost, but also the biggest base clock. The RTX 4080 12GB has only 46 percent of the raw performance of the 4090, or 79 percent of the raw performance of the RTX 4080 16GB. Memory bandwidth has a similar gradation. Speaking of RAM, 12 GiB has a speed of 21 GBit/s and is connected with 192 bits. This corresponds to a transmission capacity of 504 GB/s. The TGP has 285 watts and can be configured up to 366 watts.
