Ukraine war: 4A Games’ Andrii Korzinkin dies – Metro Exodus developer mourns death of animator

What happened? On October 2, 2022, developer Leonid Stepanov of the Ukrainian studio 4A Games announced that 33-year-old colleague Andrii Korzinkin fell defending his country on September 24. On October 5, the developer studio confirmed the death of the employee. Korzinkin joined the Ukrainian armed forces after the war began and was able to rescue his parents from Mariupol in the early days of the war – but was killed in action in Mykolaiv. According to reports, the city was bombed on the day of his death. 4A Games mourned the death of their valued colleague on Twitter using the hashtags #StandWithUkraine and #GloryToTheHeroes. According to the studio, Korzinkin was buried in a military cemetery among other Ukrainian heroes.

Colleagues mourn: The developers behind Metro Exodus learned only sparsely about the death of their friend. Stepanov became aware of his colleague’s death through a LinkedIn post and could not believe it. “My first reaction was denial. That it would be impossible That this can’t happen to Andrii“, explains Stepanov, “Even later, as I shared the horrific news, I kept hoping it all turned out to be a mistake“. Other colleagues also cost their sympathy on social networks.

Who was Andrii Korzinkin? During his time at 4A Games, Andrii Korzinkin breathed life into the mutants and creatures of Metro Exodus as an animator. The Ukrainian developer shared his latest and favorite animations on Twitter. His talent was well appreciated at 4A Games and his peers remember Korzinkin as a positive and calm person who loved board games and time in the gym. Korzinkin is remembered by his friends at 4A Games for his dry humor and helpfulness

More developers at war – 4A Games honors the heroes of Ukraine

Other developers at war: In an interview with PC Gamer, Stepanov revealed that at least eight other 4A Games developers are fighting for their land. Some of them have been on the battlefield since the first day of the war. The rest of the 4A Games staff learned about the war and the military as they already knew what was going to happen in the coming months. The team thinks constantly of their brave comrades-in-arms fighting for the freedom of Ukraine.

The fact that it was so difficult for Korzinkin’s friends to find out about his death shows how demanding the information situation is in the Ukraine war. Russia has already blocked social networks to prevent coordinated resistance and deceive the people at home. But game publishers are also sealing off new games from Russia. It remains unclear how long Russian and Ukrainian citizens will have to fear the war.
