Special Edition Magic: The Gathering Outrages Fans: “$1,000 For This Is Absolutely Ridiculous”

Magic: The Gathering – You have to pay €1000 for these 60 cards

The well-known trading card game Magic: The Gathering will soon be celebrating its 30th anniversary. Wizards of the Coast is launching a special edition to mark the occasion. However, many fans of the franchise are outraged because: You have to spend around €1,000 for 60 tickets – in their opinion the price is far too high.

In 1993, Wizards of the Coast released the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. In addition to the tabletop version, it can now also be played as a digital game and is very popular worldwide.

With the game’s 30th anniversary approaching, the publishers announced a special product which will be: Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition. However, for 60 random special edition cards, players will have to spend around €1,000; that’s too expensive for many fans. The reactions from the community were correspondingly negative.

“For $1,000 I can buy a very good printer”

What does the Magic community say about the special edition? on reddit many users complain about the high price of the cards. Sandman1278 says, “I thought her [die Edition] be good. Then they named the $999 price, sheesh.”

Also under one Twitter post of Magic: The Gathering’s 30th Anniversary Official Channel has been raining negative comments from the community. @The_Milkmann says “$1,000 for proxies is absolutely ridiculous” and @Starlight_Witch asks “Why are proxies more expensive to make than legal cards?”

So-called proxy cards merely represent “real” Magic cards. The term is also used for self-made copies. They are not allowed in tournaments and are therefore more of collectible value than actual use in competitive matches.

First and foremost, the community seems to be bothered by the very high price of proxies. Because instead of the original well-known Magic cards, such as the legendary “Black Lotus”, the set is about retro cards that are not allowed in tournaments. For hardcore fans they are almost useless.

Some users also joke that for €1,000 instead of the cards they could just buy a very good printer to make their own proxies.

What does the special edition look like? Each box contains 4 packs, each containing 15 random cards from the 30th Anniversary Edition. The cards contain old artworks, which have now been reissued in combination with a modern design.

In the Magic: The Gathering gallery you can see all the special edition cards.

When will the special edition go on sale? Beginning November 28, 2022, Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition will be available on the Website 30thEdition.wizards.com sold. North American buyers are expected to receive the cards later this year, while buyers from other regions will likely have to wait until early 2023.
