Halloween is almost here and a game that would fit perfectly with THE spooky night of the year is unfortunately being dropped from the PS Plus Premium library just before that. We’re talking about SOMA, which stuck with me for a really long time after I gambled. If you haven’t played it yet, you have until October 18th Time to catch up – and you should definitely do it. Then you can at least heat up the Halloween mood in advance.

Machine monsters in sea depths

It’s all about this: In SOMA we take on the perspective of a young man named Simon who is suffering from headaches and other symptoms after a car accident. An experimental neurological treatment does not bring him the relief he had hoped for, but quite the opposite: when Simon opens his eyes again, he finds himself in a gloomy and apparently abandoned research facility. How he got there is as much a mystery to him as it is to us.

As he explores the futuristic and eerie corridors, he learns that he is deep beneath the sea – and that humanity has not ended well on the surface. That alone would actually be enough to digest, but then Simon realizes that the station is not as deserted as expected.

Some of the discoveries in SOMA are not for the faint of heart - especially since we also delve into the story behind them.

Menacing machine beings with consciousness stomp through the facility. Troubled creatures who cannot escape their bleak existence and are only too happy to take their anger out on others. In addition, Simon also encounters other forms of life, which always raise philosophical questions such as: “What is life? And what is worth living? Can the spirit survive detached from its physical body? When are we still ourselves? What defines us? And what about people?”

SOMA is also represented in our subjective list of the best horror games. Check out where it ended up:

Simon’s only beacon of hope in this chaos is Catherine, a station resident whom he radios and who wants to help him understand his predicament and get out of it. But Catherine also has a dark secret… But I’ll let you find out for yourself.

Our main task in SOMA is exploration, which is quite eerie in the oppressive scenery and when hiking outdoors in inhospitable depths. When encountering monsters we can only keep a low profile, we cannot defend ourselves. On the other hand, we have to solve a few puzzles to get closer to our goal and sometimes make an unpleasant decision.

Samara Summer

Amnesia developer Frictional Games released SOMA back in 2015, but seven years later the game is still one of my favorite genre titles. When I’m asked for spooky tips, I often say: “Play SOMA!”, because the shocker gave me goose bumps with its oppressive atmosphere and didn’t just raise my pulse with cheap jump scares or a gore overload.

I immediately liked the protagonist Simon and that’s why it wasn’t difficult for me to root for his story – and it has really cool twists to offer.

Are you going to catch up on SOMA now? Or do you already know the horror game?
