If you want to play CoD Modern Warfare 2 on the PC, you have to provide a phone number

Captain Price also plays in this Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is almost here, but it’s already causing a stir with phone notifications.

If you want to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on PC later this month, you’ll need to use your Activision Blizzard aka Battle.net account necessarily link a phone number. However, there are a number of requirements that this number must meet.

CoD Modern Warfare 2 requires a phone number on PC

Actually, associating phone numbers with Battle.net accounts is for Overwatch 2 or CoD Modern Warfare 2 a good thing: we get more security thanks to two-factor authentication and cheaters can be blocked better once and for all. It gets stupid, however, if the whole thing doesn’t work as planned or excludes people who can only afford cheaper prepaid solutions. On the official Battle.net support page is it[called:

“Any mobile phone with a data plan in a supported country can be used for this service.”

So you have to with your mobile phone number first of all be able to receive SMS. iMessage, WhatsApp or similar messengers do not work, Voice over IP numbers are also excluded. But you can also have problems with a prepaid version.

Prepaid phones must stay outside

There was a lot of fuss about the Overwatch 2 launch in the US because the same requirement applies there and you have to provide a phone number in order to be able to play at all. However, prepaid phone numbers are completely excluded there, you need a contract.

Which is of course frustrating, especially for people who cannot or do not want to afford a corresponding, often more expensive contract. Activision Blizzard had to put up with the accusation from fans that the publisher had managed to make people “too poor” even for a Free2Play game could be.

Response and change: There is now one Statement from Blizzard and a small but nice change. This at least allows all Overwatch players who have a connected Battle.net account to play the sequel even without a phone number. This includes anyone who played after June 9, 2021. However, if you set up a new account, you still need a number that must not be prepaid.

How is Modern Warfare 2 and Overwatch 2 in Germany?

Apparently it works: The German language support page and the English language differ in one important point. While it says in English right at the beginning that prepaid numbers don’t work, this passage is missing in German. But below it still says:

“This service may not work with prepaid phones.”

Overwatch 2 works: We tried out here in Germany with Overwatch 2 whether we can also use the number of a prepaid contract for Blizzard’s phone number messaging. With success: That doesn’t seem to be a problem and should then most likely also apply in connection with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

What are your experiences with the new telephone number requirement? Having trouble with prepaid numbers in Overwatch 2?
