Lord of the Rings: When is Amazon's Rings of Power set?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power serves as a kind of prequel to the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. Like these, the Amazon series is based on books by JRR Tolkien. It takes place well before the events of the Lord of the Rings books, but there are also differences from the original.

Lord of the Rings: When is Rings of Power?

Thousands of years before Lord of the Rings: The special thing about the new Amazon series “Rings of Power” is that it doesn’t just play just before the well-known “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” stories, but many thousands of years before.

In the Second Age: The plot of first season of Rings of Power begins relatively early in the so-called Second Age. We will most likely spend much of the age in the five planned seasons experience.

That would be one then Period totaling 3441 years – and as I said, this is only a fraction of the complete timeline. That’s how it will be epic breadth of Tolkien’s Middle-earth books is particularly evident.

These are the five ages of the Lord of the Rings universe

There are five ages in total in the world of JRR Tolkien and the “Rings of Power” series. But one of them isn’t counted correctly because it happened before the world came into being, so to speak. Another comes at the end and was never told to the end.

The five Middle-earth ages at a glance:

  1. The Age Before Days (in a way, the story of creation and the origin of the world)
  2. The First Age (Melkor/Morgoth causes chaos, war and destruction, ultimately defeated)
  3. The Second Age (Morgoth is defeated, Sauron awakens, storyline of The Rings of Power)
  4. The Third Age (“The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” take place in this period)
  5. The Fourth Age (Sauron is defeated, but there is still a battle to come)

The First Age is the age before the days sort of age 0.

The Last and Fourth Age was never properly formed by the authors of the books. It begins at the end of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and all we know is that at some point there should actually still be a big, all-important battle.

So the most important ages are the middle three. The first is about the elves, the Valars, Melkor aka Morgoth and his nasty machinations. The Second Age will be through the Victory over Morgoth heralded and in this time “The Rings of Power” takes place. The Third Age is the time in which “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” take place.

What is different in Rings of Power than in the Silmarillion book template?

If you want to know what happened before the events in “The Rings of Power”, you can’t avoid the silmarillion to read. In it you will find all five ages described and it is the template for the Amazon series.

The biggest difference, which the Amazon series has compared to the book template is the temporal compression. The events that take place in the books over 3,000 years will probably be in the series significantly compressed in time presented and pressed into a shorter period of time.

Then there would be the fact that Galadriel’s husband Celeborn the first few episodes aren’t mentioned at all and then it sounds like he’s dead. That does not match the template.

There is a whole load of characters in “The Rings of Power” that we not found in the Silmarillion be able. This includes, for example half border.

Also the particularly valuable and popular material mithril comes in the Lord of the Rings series a new feature to. The metal also gets a previously unknown origin story.
