As in Overwatch: Also for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 you have to enter a phone number

After some players were recently upset about the mandatory deposit of a mobile phone number for Overwatch 2, the same procedure is now also in store for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 users. This also means that certain users of prepaid cards could be excluded again. Because that was the case with Overwatch 2 as well.

On the relevant page of Battle.net Support states that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 accounts, “newly created Overwatch 2 accounts” and “newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts” must provide a number in order to access the game.

Because of security.

“Adding a phone number allows Blizzard Entertainment to send you notifications when important changes are made to your account. Any mobile phone in a supported country with a data plan that is not a prepaid or VOIP number can be used for this service.

This is also the case if you buy the game on Steam.

It says in the fine print that a phone number must be associated with the Steam account in order to play the game. However, there is nothing to read about the prepaid restrictions.

Our English colleagues have already contacted Activision and asked how players with prepaid cards should be able to access the game.

Because especially low earners, price-conscious people and young people use these cards, with all good will, which I do not want to rule out here, it is a clumsy move. Games shouldn’t be a luxury item that filters its users down.

At the same time, Blizzard had already made some improvements to Overwatch and exempted existing accounts from this obligation. We’ll see if there’s a little movement in terms of prepaid cards.

Blizzard sees requiring a phone number as an important step in minimizing “disruptive behavior” — which might actually work. But then please, without excluding certain people!

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28th.
