Coral Island: Stardew Valley alternative launched in Early Access

Coral Island (Simulation) von Stairway Games

Anyone who has already played Stardew Valley up and down can now look forward to a new alternative: After around a year and a half of development, Coral Island has started in Early Access on Steam and in the PC Game Pass.

The debut game from Indonesian developer Stairway Games takes you to the tropical island of Coral Island. There you will experience a fairly traditional farm game in the style of the already mentioned Stardew Valley or Harvest Moons, despite the unusual scenario.

Coral Island: Farm with an environmental touch

As with the obvious role models, in Coral Island you start with your own character at the very beginning. You inherit a small farm that first has to be brought into shape: felling trees, breaking stones, creating fields and so on.

Gradually you will earn your first money, which you can use to further upgrade your farm. Alternatively, you can plunge into the mine and go on a monster hunt or make friends with the inhabitants of Coral Island. You can meet over 50 residents on the island and potentially form a relationship with some of them.

In addition to these classic mechanics, Coral Island also values environmental protection. The game’s framework story revolves around a company that wants to make big money on the tropical island – at the expense of the residents and the coral reef.

It is therefore part of your job to put a stop to the machinations of the company and at the same time to protect the environment. For example, you can dive to the bottom of the sea and clean up trash and other debris to keep Coral Island alive.

What content is still planned?

Launching in Early Access is the next step for Coral Island, having funded the game via Kickstarter in less than 36 hours in early 2021. In the current preliminary phase, the farm simulation should spend at least a year during which the developers will add further content and updates.

According to Stairway Games, the following content is planned:

  • more storylines
  • More interactions with NPCs
  • marry and have children
  • appropriate outfits for the NPCs during the respective seasons
  • matching outfits for individual NPCs for swimming and festivals
  • Customization of the outside of the house
  • 9 different festivals
  • Access to 30m and 40m diving depths
  • Access to wind and fire shafts in the cave
  • 1 more biome to unlock
  • Merfolk NPCs and Kingdom

In addition, there should be a full multiplayer mode in an update after the release of the full version. Details will follow as Coral Island nears completion.

at Steam Coral Island is going down pretty well so far. 91 percent of the user reviews submitted so far have been positive, although only 212 votes have been counted so far. In addition, Coral Island is currently number 4 on the worldwide Steam sales charts.
