GPU shortage and scalpers
New graphics card, old game: One day after the release of the RTX 4090, the new Nvidia flagship is already sold out. A few copies can only be found on eBay – at once again inflated prices.
Customers who hoped for an improvement in the graphics card market with yesterday’s release of the Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090 are currently being bitterly disappointed: Despite the exorbitant RRP of 1,949 euros, almost all Nvidia GPU models were quickly sold out.
It is only on eBay that individual offers can be found that do not deserve this designation. The prices of the Geforce RTX 4090 in various custom designs start here insane 2,500 euros and are reminiscent of the times of the corona pandemic, when scalpers demanded similar price premiums on Nvidia’s RTX 30 series and AMD’s current Radeon graphics cards.
The hopes for a smooth market launch of the Geforce RTX 4090 have been dashed in record time. The reasons for the false start can at best be narrowed down: Did Nvidia underestimate the demand for the flagship model and produce it in small quantities and was the focus from the outset on the next RTX 40 graphics cards? After all, the RTX 4080 (Ti) is already in the starting blocks.
Crypto mining is currently likely to have less of an impact than it did two years ago. After all, after the Ethereum merge, a GPU is no longer necessary to validate the blockchain. A proof-of-work alternative with a focus on graphics cards has not yet emerged.
Regardless of what triggered the onslaught, it will likely be difficult for prospective buyers to get one of the coveted GPUs at the normal price in the next few weeks. In our shop overview for the Geforce RTX 4090 you will find all well-known dealers who usually list the Nvidia graphics card at the actual RRP and with a bit of luck are also available.
