A bug in LoL is said to have affected the Worlds result: "Would be a big problem for Riot"

There were already two officially confirmed bugs at the World Championships in League of Legends. Now the YouTuber Vandiril has uncovered another possible error. However, this could have negatively influenced the result of an entire group and knocked a favorite out of the tournament.

What is this error?

  • The bug appeared during Saturday’s match between GAM and Top Esports, according to Vandiril. At 40 minutes, Top Esports was close to winning the game and was already attacking the Nexus.
  • Levi, GAM’s jungler, used his ultimate as Karthus, damaging all four attackers. However, Vandiril noticed that Maw of Malmortius, an item on Lucian, wasn’t activating to absorb the damage.
  • As a result, Lucian died faster and failed to destroy the Nexus. GAM, in turn, dismantled the Nexus in a direct counterattack and won.

Had Top Esports won, there would have been a three-team tie and more decider matches. Rogue might not have made the playoffs that close.

Top Esports could have moved into the KO phase without a bug

What exactly did Vandiril discover? In the tweet linked above, the YouTuber explains his find:

  • Nami took 930 damage from Karthus’ ultimate and had 96 magic resist
  • Lucian took 924 damage from the ability and had 100 magic resist
  • However, Lucian possessed the Maw of Malmortius item. This has the passive effect: “If you would take magic damage that would reduce your maximum health below 30%, you gain a shield that absorbs 350 magic damage for 5 seconds (90 second cooldown)”

So Lucian should have absorbed 350 incoming damage and still have 450 life points. According to Vandiril, this extra life would have been enough to survive the incoming damage from Sett and carry out further attacks on the Nexus.

You can see the situation again in this video. It can also be seen that the item’s animation is not activated (usually a purple shield effect):

Why is this so important? Top Esports finished the group stage with three wins and three losses. That was only enough for third place and ensured that the real title favorite was eliminated before the quarter-finals.

Rogue and DRX, on the other hand, had four wins and two losses to take 1st and 2nd place in Group C.

If Top Esports had beaten GAM and the rest of the day had gone exactly the same way, there would have been three teams with the same score, each winning once against the other. It would have come to a sting of all three teams. Top Esports would then have had the chance to knock Rogue or DRX out of the tournament and move into the KO phase themselves.

Top Esports might even have been able to live up to the role of favourite.

No public statement from Riot yet

What does Riot Games say about this? So far there has been no statement from the developers on Vandiril’s allegation. However, it would not be the first bug in these worlds:

  • The champion Orianna was already deactivated during the first week of the group stage. There was a visual bug here that caused the Ultimate to animate not only under the orb, but also under Orianna herself. That was also what Vandiril found out at the time (via Twitter).
  • In addition, Vandiril found a bug with the tower aggro in the game Fnatic vs EDG (via Twitter).

There are a number of memes on Twitter and on reddit that say Riot Games is already afraid of Vandiril. As fun as these memes are, the situation is serious. on reddit the user Bigdonger writes:

If this was indeed a bug, then this would be a big problem for Riot. Lucian was in AA range when he dropped to 97 HP.

The number of mistakes this year has been criticized by many players. They now hope that Riot Games will comment again in detail.

What do you say about the bug? And how would you react if you were in Riot? Feel free to write it in the comments.
