Players in an ancient MMORPG have become way too strong over the years, now they are being nerfed

Tibia is one of the veterans of MMORPGs. This year the game turned 25 years old. Some players have probably become much too strong over the long term and have reached levels in the four-digit range. A nerf should now remedy the situation.

Which MMORPG is it? The game is about Tibia, one of the oldest MMORPGs ever. It comes from the game studio CipSoft and was released in 1997. At the beginning of 2022, the game celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The game boomed so much in 2020 that the employees got a substantial increase in their salaries.

Even if the game is a bit older, it still has loyal fans to this day. Apparently, players have been playing Tibia well for many years and have become so strong that a nerf will weaken the scaling of the “damage” and “healing” stats per level.

Here you can see the trailer for an MMORPG that combines Tibia and Ultima Online:

“Many already have characters over level 1000”

What is the player nerf like? The nerf refers to “damage” and “healing” of a character. The influence of the level on these two values is reduced.

There is a rescaling of how much the damage and healing values increase as higher levels are reached:

  • Up to level 500: no change, damage and healing +1 every 5 levels
  • Level 501-1100: Damage and Healing +1 every 6 levels
  • Level 1101-1800: Damage and Healing +1 every 7 levels
  • Level 1801-2600: Damage and Healing +1 every 8 levels
  • Level 2601-3500: Damage and Healing +1 every 9 levels
  • Above level 3500, the same logic continues (increments of 500, 600, 700, etc.)

Why are the players genefted? According to Tibia’s community manager, the rate at which characters level up has accelerated, with the result that “many already have characters over level 1000” (via tibia.com).

The problem: Even with these enormously high levels, the character values of “damage” and “healing” keep increasing – every 5 levels by the value 1.

The previous scaling of the values no longer works because the players simply have characters that are too strong too quickly.

Also, the game makers want Tibia to focus more on gear and abilities.

This change also applies retrospectively. This means: For characters over level 500, the damage and healing will now be lower than before the nerf, depending on the current level.

In the end, the game studio’s community managers write: “We know this is a significant step, but it is necessary for the balance of the game, especially since the upcoming Skill Wheel will make the characters stronger overall than they were before the tomorrow’s adjustment were” (tibia.com).

What is the Skill Wheel? The “Skill Wheel” is planned to be added to the game as a new feature in the winter update. A sneak peak von Tibia provides information on:

It is a feature designed to allow the player to further specialize their character based on their individual desires and playstyle. The character gains points with each level, which in turn can be used to unlock additional benefits.

Among the perks there are small changes, like an “increase in total hit points”, but also more powerful effects, like access to a new spell.
