Youtube Premium: Prices are increasing in the first countries
cost increase
Youtube is raising the price of Youtube Premium in parts of the world. Depending on the country, family subscribers in particular face additional costs of almost up to 30 percent.
news
YouTube Premium subscribers receive an email from Google in many parts of the world. This informs about price increases of the premium service. The family tariff is particularly affected, in which instead of one person, up to six family members can watch YouTube ad-free, download content, play it offline and use a separate music catalogue.
9to5google.com collected some of the new prizes. These amounts count as the new monthly fee in the following countries:
- USA: from 17.99 to 22.99 US dollars (+27%)
- Canada: from 17.99 to 22.99 CAD (+27%)
- United Kingdom (UK): 17.99 to 19.99 pounds (+11%)
- Argentina: 179 to 699 ARS (+290%)
- Japan: 1,780 to 2,280 yen (+28%)
In Argentina and Turkey, tariffs for individuals will also increase. For Argentina an increase from 119 to 389 ARS (+226%) is mentioned, for Turkey 16.99 to 29.99 TRY (+76%). In the comparison, however, we have to somewhat disregard the two countries that are particularly plagued by inflation.
Who (in the USA) was already using Youtube Red is to be upgraded in April from US$ 14.99 (for Youtube Premium) per month to US$ 22.99. Google says it will give at least 30 days notice of a price increase. The countries mentioned so far will pay the higher tariffs from November 21st.
If you take out YouTube Premium now, you already pay the new prices in the regions mentioned. There are no such reports in Germany yet. But it can be assumed that we will not be an exception here and will rank somewhere between the UK and USA / Canada. Youtube Premium Family currently costs 17.99 euros in Germany. Individual accounts pay 12 euros.
There is no dedicated explanation as to why Youtube is increasing prices. The previous tariffs have been in effect for around four years. But it is obvious that the streaming providers – and above all Google with YouTube Premium – have to minimize their rising costs and / or increase the dwindling profits.
Youtube recently tested offering 4K resolution exclusively in Youtube Premium. This is what Netflix does for its premium subscription, for example. That didn’t seem to go down well on YouTube, so the test was ended.
But not everything is rosy with Netflix either. Dwindling numbers are tackled with a cheaper advertising subscription (which could be reminiscent of YouTube through regular advertising clips). In addition, account sharing will be made more difficult or, in the “classic” form, will only be legitimately possible for a fee.
