The Rings of Power: Who is Sauron's Master Morgoth?

During the first season The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power the name falls Morgoth – especially in connection with Sauron – again and again and yet we never get to see him. What’s with the mysterious evil?

Who is Morgoth?

The original name of Morgoth was Melkor. He comes from the lineage of the Ainur (Quenya: the saints). the Ainur, in turn, were the first creatures, who created Eru/Ilúvatar (the One – quasi the Allfather, creator of the world). Among the Ainur were the mighty Valar and less powerful, but more numerous Maiar.

Melkor was one of the fifteen Valar and among them even the most powerful. His mind is described in the Handbook of Sages as “dark and terrible” described.

Morgoth: The creator of all evil

Driven by pride he renounced the Valar and declared himself the sole ruler of Middle-earth. He destroyed the works of the other Valar and twisted their creations, causing, for example, the Orcs, dragons and trolls developed.

So Melkor betrayed his maker, whereupon his name erased from the writings of the Valar and he was doomed to exist without his equal. Henceforth he was called Morgoth (Sindarin: The Black Enemy).

Morgoth created a Realm of darkness and cold; it kindled fires and the deep freezes that have reigned in the north ever since. There he also built the fortress of Utumno (Quenya: deep, Sindarin: Udununderground fortress).

Many of the Maiar joined him. That’s how he drew it Balrogs to his side and gave them their flaming form. These were led by her Lord Gothmogthe next to Sauron (also a Maia), who was the most powerful of Morgoth’s servants.

Morgoth’s role in The Rings of Power

That First Ages was shaped by Morgoth’s reign of terror and the resulting Wars against the Valar, eventually against elves, men and dwarves. After Morgoth achieved the first victories and the important Elven city Gondolin had taken, he could in the end by his enemies beaten and banished will.

The rest of history of Sauron do we know. He hid until he regained enough power to eventually to deceive the elveslike that the rings of power to forge and to cover Middle-earth again with blood and darkness.

It is unlikely that we will ever set eyes on Morgoth will. However, his dark nature is omnipresent.
