G.fast: Telekom is planning further gigabit speeds over copper lines

Broadband test: German fiber optics and Telekom win, Vodafone disappoints

from Sarah Petzold
Although the FFTH expansion in Germany is progressing, Deutsche Telekom wants to push the G.fast project further and enable gigabit via copper cable. The company has now officially announced this.

Gigabit speeds despite a copper line – this has so far been a dream for many Germans. In many places, network operators have long been using fiber optics to implement high-speed Internet throughout Germany via FTTH expansion. But Deutsche Telekom still wants to push ahead with a project that should enable gigabit Internet via copper cable: namely G.fast.

G.fast not set, but no details on possible launch date

A field test for G.fast started in Frankfurt in October 2017. At that time, Telekom wanted to implement corresponding G.fast lines as an FTTB option. The company then announced in July 2019 that it wanted to cooperate with the US supplier Adtran for G.fast from 2020. The project then became quiet, but Telekom has now published a new sign of life with a video on YouTube.

The video shows a cable test facility in Darmstadt. A spokesman explains:

“We are also looking at how we can achieve gigabit speeds via our copper network. Keyword: G.fast. After all, not everyone lives in a new building that is perfectly prepared for fiber optics.”

Telekom has not yet given up on the G.fast project and apparently hopes to use it to close existing supply gaps at locations where fiber optic supply could be difficult. However, the company has not yet announced any precise details as to when tests with end users will start or when exactly the technology can be expected to be implemented on a large scale. As soon as we know more, we will report on it promptly.
