Geforce RTX 4090 on fire: Reddit user shows charred 12VHPWR connectors

Cablemod explains how users should handle their 12VHPWR cables.

from Oliver Jaeger
The first case of melted 12VHPWR connectors on the new Geforce RTX 4090 has been documented on Nvidia’s subreddit. A user presented two photos showing the charred 12VHPWR connectors on the graphics card and cable after the GPU began to smoke. The owner meanwhile believes that the cable is faulty and therefore wants to send it back.

Anyone who has been waiting for the first smoke to appear since the release of Nvidia’s new high-end graphics card Geforce RTX 4090 can now mark this in red on their calendar. Because Reddit user “Reggie_gakil” reported in the Nvidia subreddit of his awkward incident and provided two evidence images with charred 12VHPWR connectors on both ends. Reggie_gakil explains that he suddenly noticed an unpleasant smell and then saw smoke.

Burnt 12VHPWR Connectors – What Caused It?

The Reddit user used a custom model of the Geforce RTX 4090 in the form of a gaming OC from Gigabyte. Both the power connector on the graphics card and the connector on the 4 x 8-pin 12VHPWR cable are largely melted. At first glance, the damage only appears to have occurred on the twelve separate pins, but the cable connection shows that the four other pins have also been affected.

At the time of the incident, the Reddit user was said to be playing Red Dead Redemption 2 with his Geforce RTX 4090. It is now known that the cable can be adversely affected by rising temperatures when it is bent or subjected to heavy loads. He himself suspects that it could have been a faulty cable, since its bend was not too strong. However, Reggie-gakil wants to send in the cable and adds that such a fire would not occur with a €2,000 GPU and an RMX-1000X power supply from Corsair should happen.

It was recently found that the 12VHPWR adapter cable for the Geforce RTX 4090 was simply too thick and not easy to handle in smaller PC cases, as it often bumped into the side panel. So users have to bend the cable a lot to close the panel. As noted, this is not recommended as it could heat up the cables and cause the adapter to burst into flames. Manufacturers of custom cables and modding companies – Cablemod would be a good example – are trying to solve this problem by offering 90-degree angled plugs for this case, which should be available in a few weeks.
