The Witcher gets a remake and trims Geralt's gray hair with modern tools

This year CD Projekt’s original The Witcher turns 15 years old. A perfect occasion for the developers to announce a remake of the first part. The remake of The Witcher is currently in the early stages of development.

Soon Geralt looks about 15 years younger

So the Witcher remake was hiding behind the code name “Canis Majoris”, which the studio used in its last strategy session. The role-playing game was first released for PC in 2007 and became a trilogy in 2015 with The Witcher 3. The franchise is now available on all major consoles and is considered a classic game of the 21st century.

The Geralt of the first part is brought to the Unreal Engine 5 with the remake and built with the toolset that CD Projekt is developing for the new Witcher saga. State-of-the-art tools so that the remake not only teleports Geralt a few years into the future, but directly into the present day with the current possibilities.

A team of Witcher veterans has assembled for the remake. For example, employees who worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Creative oversight will be handled entirely by CD Projekt Red.

This is how The Witcher 3 looks today. The remake of the first part should look even better with the technical possibilities than the popular last part of the first Witcher saga.

The Witcher doesn’t have to be Assassin’s Creed – please don’t burn Geralt, CD Projekt!

“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we ever made and it was a big moment for us at the time. Going back to that place and redeveloping the game with that for the next generation of gamers to experience feels just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, Head of Studio at CDPR.

CD Projekt Red is collaborating with Fools Theory on this project. CEO Jakub Rokoz is very happy about the cooperation and “that my professional paths have crossed again with my developer colleagues from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it comes to a remake of a project that is so dear to our hearts”.
