WoW: Dragonflight is just around the corner – Shadowlands is now integrated into the base game
The pre-patch for WoW: Dragonflight not only brought the first content of the upcoming expansion to the live servers, but also officially retired Shadowlands as an expansion. Because from today no one has to buy Shadowlands anymore since it is integrated into the base game.
The Shadowlands expansion is not actually over with the pre-patch for WoW: Dragonflight, but most players feel that their thoughts are already on the Dragon Islands. And for the developers, Shadowlands has officially come to the end of its lifetime. Because they have now officially removed the WoW: Shadowlands extension from the market.
Since the pre-patch, Shadowlands has simply been part of the basic game of WoW (buy now ). So you no longer have to buy an extra expansion if you want to go to the shadow lands. So now seems like the perfect time to jump back in as a former player who skipped Shadowlands.
It used to be called Battle Chest
So if you take out a WoW subscription today, you can play all expansions up to and including Shadowlands at no additional cost: Classic, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth and now also Shadowlands.
In the meantime, Blizzard has simply integrated the past extensions into the main game for many years. The developers are thus replacing the long-established Battle Chest. This used to include the main game plus the expansions that had already been released and was regularly expanded. However, this sometimes led to confusion, since it was not uncommon for old Battle Chests to still be on the shelves and being sold.
It’s a bit bitter that Blizzard didn’t announce this decision earlier. It’s not surprising, since the expansions were also included in the base game as a pre-patch in the past, but probably none of the returnees really had that in mind.
