The PS5 hit 2 million sales in Japan, but the PS4 and PS3 were each faster

The PlayStation 5 has reached the two million sales milestone in Japan, but it hasn’t been as quick as other modern Sony consoles.

Current numbers of Famitsu according to the console has now sold 2,027,783 units in Japan.

Not as fast as PS4 and PS3

1,749,737 of these are for the PS5 console with a disc drive, and the remaining 278,046 are for the Digital Edition.

In total, it took the PS5 101 weeks, or a little under two years, to break the two million mark.

It was even faster on the two previous consoles. The PS4 needed 90 weeks for this milestone, with the PlayStation 3 it was much faster at 73 weeks.

Why it took longer

Still, it’s not a bad performance given the (recently increased) price of the PlayStation 5 and ongoing supply issues related to component shortages.

Furthermore, scalpers who sell consoles for dear money outside of Japan still seem to be a problem in Japan. Added to this is the market dominance of the Nintendo Switch in Japan, which has sold more than 25 million units there to date.

Sony’s stronger focus on games for Western players could also play a role.

To date, 21.7 million (as of June 30, 2022) PS5 consoles have been shipped worldwide.
