God of War Ragnarok: 7 Things You Need to Know Before Buying – The Story

This is what happens in the new part: God of War Ragnarok follows the events of its 2018 predecessor almost seamlessly. In the final installment of the series, Kratos traveled across the Norse realms with his son Atreus to bury the ashes of his late wife Faye on Midgard Peak. The two had already clashed several times with various deities of Norse mythology and had made powerful enemies.

In God of War Ragnarök, with the end of the three-year Fimbul winter, the eponymous downfall of the world is imminent and the father-son team must once again travel the nine realms. Not only are Kratos and Atreus trying to prevent Ragnarok, they must also unravel a dark prophecy they both learned about at the end of their latest adventure. However, the Norse gods are anything but happy about the antics of the Greek god of war and still have a few unfinished business to settle with him.

God of War Ragnarök will be the second and arguably final installment in the series as Kratos carves his way through Norse mythology. However, it is still uncertain whether the entire series will come to an end with this game.

God of War Ragnarok: 7 Things You Need to Know Before Buying – The Gods

You have to deal with these gods: Against his will, Kratos must once again confront a pantheon of various deities and their henchmen in God of War Ragnarök. After these were rather sparsely represented in the last part, this time the god of war has to deal with a genuine all-star cast of mythical gods. Many of them were confirmed with a performance before the release.

  • Thor – The god of thunder is said to play a major role, his appearance was already teased at the end of God of War (2018).
  • Odin – The father of the gods was not announced in advance, but he will definitely appear in this part as a main character in the mythological Ragnarök.
  • Freya – The forest witch/goddess and wife of Odin was an important ally in the predecessor, but has turned against Kratos and Atreus and now seeks revenge against them both.
  • Tyr – The Norse god of war is actually believed to be dead, but is a confirmed character in God of War Ragnarök. He may be one of Kratos’ few allies in this part
  • Fenrir – The God of War Ragnarök trailer also featured the giant wolf Fenrir. His role in the events of Ragnarok is unclear.

At least with Freya and Thor Kratos will have to compete at least once in the course of God of War Ragnarök, that much is already certain from the trailer material. Where there is a fight in the far north, you also need the appropriate means to dish out as much as possible in the best “God of War” manner.

God of War Ragnarok: 7 things you need to know before buying – The gameplay

How to play God of War Ragnarok: In contrast to its predecessor, the gameplay of God of War Ragnarök hasn’t changed that much. You continue to run as Kratos in the third-person perspective through the nine realms and distribute respect cuffs with the Leviathan ax and the blades of chaos. Santa Monica Studio sticks to the proven recipe and relies on slow but powerful fights. Certainly Kratos should also get some new weapons and tools for his arsenal in the new part to freshen up the game.

What shouldn’t have changed much in God of War Ragnarök is the one-take camera work, which received great praise from the press in the last part. As long as you don’t pause or exit the game, the camera will always transition seamlessly from gameplay to cutscenes, telling the game’s story without any cuts or changes of perspective. You can certainly experience a few impressive moments up close with the two main characters.

God of War Ragnarök: 7 things you need to know before buying – game length and sidequests

This is how long God of War Ragnarok will be: After the first reviews of God of War Ragnarök have arrived, there is now solid information about the duration of the game. According to press reports, the story itself should take around 25 hours. This puts Ragnarök at about the same length as the last God of War.

In addition to the actual story of God of War Ragnarök, there will also be some side jobs again. Side quests and additional challenges seem to make up an even bigger part of the game. If you want to do everything Ragnarök has to offer, you can count on up to 60 hours of gameplay.
