No new 6vs6 map for CoD MW2 in Season 1 – players fear for multiplayer mode support

cod modern warfare season 1 roadmap

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 is upon us, and players are comparing the early season roadmaps over the last few years. Some therefore fear below-average support for the multiplayer of the latest CoD – Warzone 2 in particular is considered a scapegoat.

The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was overwhelmingly successful. It was able to attract 40% more players than any other premium release before it.

However, important content was missing at the start:

  • No hardcore mode
  • No insight into your own statistics
  • Hardly any opportunities to unlock anything, apart from the weapon camouflage

For some players, CoD MW2 is more of a beta after the release. However, not for the multiplayer itself, but for the new Battle Royale Call of Duty: Warzone 2.

Many of the missing standard features for the release come into play with Season 1. An overview of the season content can be found here.

However, there are thousands of players who continue to have concerns about multiplayer after the roadmap has been revealed – because they compare the respective Season 1 of the last few years.

In the subreddit of the new Modern Warfare 2, a thread on the topic collects over 2,000 upvotes and more than 750 comments.

There is a discussion about how “Battle Royale” games in particular contribute to the downfall of multiplayer shooters. The most popular comment in the thread garnered 1,400 upvotes: “The success of Warzone and Battle Royale in general is a disaster for classic multiplayer shooters”.

Another very popular comment with 1,100 upvotes also hits a nerve: “Multiplayer these days = level up Warzone weapons in Shoot the Ship”. This means a playlist consisting of the rather smaller maps Shipment and Shoot House. There is fast action here for a lot of experience points.

What is the roadmap comparison all about? The thread on Reddit (via reddit.com) compares the announced multiplayer content of the first season of the last 4 years.

It is noticeable: While CoD MW 2019 and Black Ops Cold War offer decent map content, Vanguard (2021) and the new Modern Warfare 2 look different:

  • CoD MW 2019: 7 maps
  • Cold War: 7 maps
  • Vanguard: 2 maps
  • CoD MW2: 2 maps

The comparison with Vanguard in particular now fuels the fear that MW2 is less supported than some players would like.

From this perspective, MW2 offers even less “new” content than Vanguard – because Vanguard had a completely new map in Season 1, while MW2 now comes with two maps that players have known for years – Shipment and Shoot House. So there are no new maps.

However, the discussion completely ignores the fact that all previous titles in the list had at least 25 6vs6 maps at the end of their life cycle and thus contained a similar number of the so-called “core maps”:

  • CoD MW 2019: 25 maps
  • Cold War: 28 maps
  • Vanguard: 27 maps
    • 6vs6 maps at end of life
