For Core i9-13900K and i7-13700K: Gigabyte extends 6GHz mode to Z690 motherboards

from Oliver Jaeger
Hardware manufacturer Gigabyte Technology announced that it would also be expanding “instant 6 GHz technology” to the older Z690 motherboards for Intel’s new Core i9-13900K and Core i7-13700K processors. Gigabyte took this step for the new Z790 boards more than a month ago.

If you don’t want to wait until the supposed Core i9-13900KS, which should only appear in a limited edition, you can get a Z690 motherboard from Gigabyte and overclock either your Core i9-13900K or Core i7-13700K to 6 GHz. For this, the manufacturer has created and now expanded the “Instant 6 GHz” technology, which was rolled out for the new Z790 mainboards at the end of October.

6 GHz now also on Z690 mainboards

According to Gigabyte, all you have to do to benefit from the new feature is update the Z690 board’s BIOS and make the appropriate settings. Once this is done, users should be able to overclock their 13900K and 13700K CPUs to 6GHz. Meanwhile, it is possible to boost the Core i9-13900K to a standard turbo clock of 5.8 GHz. With the instant 6 GHz, single-core performance is increased by three percent, with the advantage that users do not have to change their platform to benefit from the higher clock speed.

After updating the BIOS and manually enabling the technology, the V-Core Load Line Calibration and the CPU voltage are increased within safe limits to detect the two most optimized cores running at a clock frequency of 6 GHz. This delivers another three percent performance boost on a single core like the Z790 platform, Gigabyte explains. BIOS support for Z690 motherboards Instant 6GHz technology has been added to the Gigabyte official website updated. Users can refresh the BIOS with Q-Flash or Q-Flash Plus to take advantage of Gigabyte’s technology.

Matching: Intel Core i5-13600K: Special BIOS also enables 5.8 GHz on B660M

It is still unclear whether Gigabyte will also offer the 6 GHz mode for mainboards with the B760. However, the release of the still unconfirmed Core i9-13900KS shouldn’t be long in coming. Then clock rates of 6 GHz should also be possible without gigabytes of features out of the box, as Intel promises.
