iPhone 15 will probably get a modern Sony camera sensor

The Sony Group recently announced that it would supply Apple with a “state-of-the-art camera sensor”. This will probably already be used in the next iPhone generation. The Sony camera sensor should shine especially in poor lighting conditions.

Like the newspaper Nike Asia reported, Sony’s semiconductor division Sony Semiconductor Solutions has developed a new photo sensor, which the company is now delivering to Apple and other smartphone manufacturers. The Sony sensor is said to roughly double the saturation signal level in each individual pixel. It can thus capture significantly more light than previous sensors. In this way, overexposure and underexposure can be avoided in certain situations.

The Sony sensor is therefore able, write Nikkei Asia, to enable a clear recording of a face even in strong backlight.

Can Sony oust Samsung as Apple’s camera supplier?

Apple’s decision to use a Sony sensor in future iPhones is a huge achievement for the Japanese company. So far, Samsung has equipped the Californians with camera sensors. So far, however, it is still unclear whether Apple plans to switch completely to Sony camera sensors.

The modern Sony sensor could possibly only be used in the Pro models of the iPhone 15. Since the last iPhone generations, Apple has established increasingly clear differences between the Standard and Pro models in terms of equipment and features. Noticeably better photo sensors in the Pro models of the next iPhone generation could tempt even more people to buy the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Whether the Sony sensor in the iPhone 15 really produces noticeably better photos than the current Samsung sensors will be seen when the new generation is released in autumn 2023.
