Sports Story is sort of the sequel to the Switch-exclusive surprise hit Golf Story. Again, we’re not dealing with an ordinary sports game, but with a role-playing game in the traditional 16-bit look. So you explore the game world, accept quests from its inhabitants, explore dark dungeons or go on a relaxing fishing trip. Nevertheless, you will of course spend a large part of the game on sports fields. The focus is on your progress as a student at a tennis academy, but other sports such as golf, volleyball or football are also included and are even combined into a big competition called “Decasportathon”.

Aka is a beautifully picture-book open-world game that mixes elements of adventures and life simulations like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon. But you also explore the world, get to know its inhabitants and embark on all kinds of adventures on their behalf. Completing them often requires you to complete various mini-games, ranging from collectible card duels to music games that require you to test your sense of rhythm.

Dragon Quest Treasures

Dragon Quest Treasures turns you into treasure hunters in the popular RPG universe

Dragon Quest Treasures lets you play the characters Erik and Mia from the hit role-playing game Dragon Quest 11, but in a completely new game world called Draconia. There, the two want to find as many treasures as possible, for which they use tamed monsters that help to track down the valuable items and also have unique abilities. Unlike the main series, Dragon Quest Treasures isn’t a traditional JRPG, but more of a Zelda-style action-adventure with some RPG elements and some platforming. There are also mechanics of a management game, since you can expand your own base with the treasures and recruit new members for your group there.

From the studio behind Pony Island, Inscryption is an unusual indie hit coming to Nintendo Switch. It is a mixture of trading card game, adventure and horror game. In turn-based battles, each action requires a card to be played. This is how we trigger spells or summon creatures, for example. After successful battles, we get more cards that improve our deck. In between, however, we can also get up and explore the room filled with strange objects where the card game takes place. Here we seem to be held captive by our opponent. In order to escape alive, we must solve some puzzles and, of course, win at the card game.

Wavetale is a colorful action-adventure game about sea exploration including mysterious islands and sunken cities. We play as Sigrid, a young girl who was given the ability to walk on water by a strange shadow creature. The story deals with the themes of loss and reconciliation and lets us meet many quirky islanders along the way. The gameplay offers a mix of battles against huge monsters, exploration of a puzzle-filled game world and acrobatic exercises in which Sigrid uses her fishing net to swing from rooftops, for example.

In Lil Gator Game you experience adventures as a small alligator in a colorful world.

In Lil Gator Game you explore an idyllic island full of green hills and bubbling streams as a small alligator. You will meet a lot of unique characters who urgently need your help. The numerous adventures that you experience are largely non-violent, because the villains that you kill with your wooden sword or pebbles are only made of cardboard. Rather than fighting, it’s more about making friends with the other children on the island, finding treasure in the form of crafting materials that can be used to create many cute items, or just relaxing and feeling comfortable in a lovely, peaceful world.

Railbound is an entertaining puzzle game with steam engines and 150 levels.

Railbound is a puzzle game in which you have to move, separate and connect railroad tracks in such a way that all passengers can get to their destination without any collisions. The concept is basically simple and therefore easy to learn, but over the course of the 150 levels new elements and obstacles such as tunnels and barriers are added and the routes become more and more complex. As a result, the puzzles become more and more tricky and remain a challenge until the end. The cute, comic-like graphic style and the calm, happy soundtrack ensure a relaxed atmosphere. Due to the shortness of the levels, Railbound is also a good game for in between.
