Destiny 2 Stuns Players With Pointless Exo-Weapon Customization – “Must Be 100% A Joke”

Whisper of the Worm Destiny2 Weapon

Tomorrow Destiny 2 will officially start the final season of The Witch Queen DLC. It starts with number 19 and brings new content and many changes, including exotic weapons. One thing, however, caused players to shake their heads incomprehensibly because it’s arguably the most pointless weapon change in Destiny 2’s FPS history.

What are the changes? Bungie has in the last blog article announced many changes to perks, skills and weapons that will come into play with the upcoming Season 19. Some of them are very bitter, while others are just extremely odd.

  • The exotic grenade launcher “Drought Gatherer” will have its casting time drastically reduced. Instead of 7.5 seconds, his possessed puddle only lasts a measly 4.5 seconds from season 19.
  • Divinity support exo debuff reduced from 30% to 15%. Only the wielder of the weapon keeps the full 30%.
  • The Exo_Rocket Launcher “Gjallarhorn” still howls, but the primary rocket’s impact and detonation damage has been reduced by 25% without affecting the pack rounds.
  • But probably the most curious adjustment is made by Bungie with the exo sniper rifle “Whisper of the Worm”. Its base effectiveness in the air is increased from 20 to a whopping 80.

With these changes, the Gjallarhorn and Drought Collector nerfs still make sense. Both exo-weapons have long topped the usage rates in their respective weapon slots.

The Gjallarhorn gave other exotic rocket launchers a hard time and also gives legendary rockets more power.

With the Drought Collector nerf, bitter as it is for many players, the weapon gradually became a lite version of the former raid exo “Anarchy”. The well-known but newly launched artifact mod “Breaking through and clearing” will probably give you some damage consolation next season.

But with the curious jumping buff for the exo sniper rifle “Whisper of the Worm”, some guardians still had to look twice. This is arguably the most pointless and inexplicable weapon change in Destiny 2’s FPS history right now.

That’s why the Whisper customization is pointless

Guardians have long wanted Bungie to make their black Exo Sniper Rifle better again with the cool look. For too long it sat in the background, although it was one of the best top weapons with the highest damage output of all power weapons and excellent handling in year 1 of Destiny 2. But then Bungie made changes that made the weapon almost useless in the heavy weapon slot.

That’s why people were happy to read the name of the weapon in the announcements for Season 19. But the buff that Bungie the Whisper ultimately wants to donate from Season 19 is incomprehensible to many.

Excerpted from the This Week at Bungie blog on 12/01/2022

Hardly anyone uses the weapon in PvP: With the change from 20 to 80 base effectiveness, Bungie could aim for players to take the weapon into PvP more often again. But that probably won’t do much, like some players in the reddit thread annotate

  • The Whisper is a sniper rifle that uses heavy ammo, which is rare in PvP.
  • In addition, the weapon is quite sluggish to play and cannot achieve a one-hit kill even with a body shot.

Because of this, some believe that despite the new gigantic air effectiveness, the logical choice will still be a regular sniper rifle with more readily available special ammunition.

In some raids there isn’t much space to fire the weapons – you stand close together.

And what about PvE? In PvE, the weapon is still used more frequently. But even there no one jumps around like a wild sniper rabbit with his exo sniper rifle in front of the final bosses. Especially not when it comes to firing precisely and repeatedly at a crit point. Rather the opposite.

  • Accuracy is important because the White Nail Exotic perk refills the magazine with three quick precision hits. Even small bumps from teammates can become a problem.
  • The Exotic is only really good with a catalyst. Here, reload speed is increased by +27 when aiming for three seconds and grants bonus range and precision damage for a moment if you stay in zoom.

The “whispering of the worm” requires exact and calm precision shots from the players and no wild “hopping around” simply because of its perks. That’s exactly why it’s astonishing and confusing for many at the same time why Bungie is now changing this value so much. Basically, the buff doesn’t do the weapon any good materially.

Since Season 17, every Guardian has to pay attention to the weapon value “Efficiency in the Air”. It calculates the accuracy of the projectiles and grants you a small or large correction from 0 to 100 using a more precise aim assist cone in the air.

A value of 100 means no penalties for accuracy in the air, so when you jump, and the same aim assist. In return, the lower your stats, the less aim assist you get while in the air.

The effects are clearly noticeable, because it can happen that you don’t kill anything anymore when you jump, even though you hit the head exactly. In this case, the terrible base accuracy of your weapon in the air could be to blame.

Jumping in Destiny 2 is now less fun: Guardians used to jump wildly and still land precise hits. However, that has changed with Air Effectiveness. So the PvP players in the community in particular are always demanding the complete abolition of the restrictive weapon value.

So the changes might still make sense: While the change is still causing players to shake their heads, it might make more sense at a later date.

In the coming year, Bungie will launch the next DLC “Lightfall”. It will bring the Guardians to Neomuna and this city and new location is literally “Cloud City”. Guardians will lasso through the air there. So there could be a future airborne DPS meta, which Bungie is already working towards a bit in the final season before Lightfall.

What do you think of the Whispers of the Worm buff? Will this make you play the weapon again? Or can you not understand the full jumping buff either. Our comments are open to you.
