If Death Stranding 2 is really going to be like the trailer, then a great sequel is coming our way

The Game Awards ran on the night of December 8th to 9th, 2022. The winners of the event were announced and numerous new games were introduced. Among them was a trailer that MeinMMO editor Marie Friske is particularly pleased about: Death Stranding 2.

As I clicked through the Game Awards trailers today to get an overview of the new releases, I was taken aback. As a huge fan of Kojima’s games, yesterday evening gave me an absolute highlight.

Ever since I finished Death Stranding I’ve been hoping for a sequel. However, I didn’t get my hopes up too high, since the first part already seemed quite complete in terms of the story.

However, Death Stranding 2 is now a sequel and I feel like Christmas came a little earlier this year. When I look at the trailer, I’m just thrilled and sit in front of it in amazement.

The Death Stranding 2 trailer has everything I want from Kojima

Death Stranding 2 – Game Awards Trailer

In typical Kojima style, I can already glean some information from the trailer, but at the same time I have no idea what is actually happening here. Much like Death Stranding, there’s a dark, apocalyptic vibe, and cinematically, the trailer is just great to watch.

There are supernatural elements that seem abstract and spooky, like gravity-defying structures in the desert or a ghostly BB that appears in a pod. Exactly what I’m used to from Kojima.

Back to the roots

Even the smallest details show that this is a Death Stranding trailer. At the beginning there is splashing, some toys are designed in the shape of sea creatures and the inside of the bunker seems familiar. Of course, a baby-in-the-throat scene, as you know it all too well from Death Stranding, shouldn’t be missing either.

Several characters from the first part are back. Fragile is very present in the trailer with a toddler who is most likely Lou. In second 0:32 you can see the name embroidered on her bib. The heavily aged main character from the first part, Sam Porter Bridges, is also there.

When watching, I immediately notice some parallels to the first trailer: Fragile, who flees from pursuers with Lou, resembles Cliff and the BB from the first trailer. The song in the background is the same, only this time sung by a different person whose voice sounds all too familiar to me…

However, there are also enough new exciting elements that make me curious: Like the people dressed in red at the beginning of the trailer or the scene in which Fragile is attacked and then seems to have a black tar border on her eyes, like Cliff. Cliff, an antagonist from the first part, was a deceased soldier who lingered restlessly on his beach in search of his BB.

For comparison, you can watch the launch trailer of the first part again here:

Is Higgs back?

Everything indicates that Higgs will once again play a major role in the second part of Death Stranding. The man with the gold skull mask appeared repeatedly as Sam’s opponent in the first game. However, he was defeated and exiled – now he seems to be back.

Because the singer of the background song could be Troy Baker, the voice actor and actor of the character Higgs. In addition, his name is displayed at the end. Since I found the character Higgs to be one of the most interesting in the first game, I’m looking forward to maybe meeting him again in the new game.

In addition, the woman at the end of the trailer with the red mask bears a strong resemblance to the “Extinction Entity” Amelie. She also wears a quipu around her neck. I could imagine that Higgs might not be the only antagonist celebrating his return from the first part.

The trailer ends with the ominous question: “Should we have connected?”

What do we know about the release date and platforms? Death Strading 2 is announced for Playstation 5. An exact release date has not yet been announced.

I’m definitely excited and can’t wait to play Kojima’s new Death Stranding installment!

Until Death Stranding 2 comes out, it makes sense to play through the first part again. Here you can read why I still celebrate Death Stranding 3 years after its release.
