Macbook Pro 14 disassembled: iFixit criticizes the repairability of the new model

After the latest release of the Macbook Pro 14 with M2 chip, the repair specialists from iFixit took a closer look at the Apple notebook and checked it for repairability. The result of the teardown is again mixed.

The Macbook Pro 14 has been available in stores for about a week, and Apple uses the new M2 Max chip, among other things. However, a new configuration potentially also means a new structure, which is why the repair specialists took a closer look at the new Apple notebook and tested its repairability and upgrade options in a teardown video.

At first glance, it quickly becomes clear in the video that Apple has only made a few changes to the structure of the new Macbook Pro 14 with M2 chip: Among other things, the SoC is placed in a similar way to that of the previous model, only the Wi-Fi 6E module and the added Thunderbolt 4 ports are new. Apparently, the size of the Macbook’s cooling element had to be reduced for this, which according to iFixit could potentially have a negative effect on performance under full load.

The main memory and the SSD are also identical and are permanently installed in the Macbook Pro 14 regardless of the capacity. Accordingly, both components are difficult to replace or expand. In combination with the large number of solder joints that have remained in the new Apple laptop, iFixit determines a “repair that is difficult for laypeople to carry out” and accordingly awards only 5 out of 10 possible points on the repairability scale. After all, Apple has one official repair guide provided for the Macbook Pro with M2 chip. This is expressly praised by iFixit: The instructions are also understandable for laypeople and give users all the information they need to be able to repair the notebook themselves if necessary.
